The available S Pacific manganese nodule geochemical data from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography data Bank (as of 1977) has been examined by a number of techniques, including the Grid Estimator Method. The results indicate that the S Pacific has only a limited potential for economic-grade manganese nodules, and that the most prospective regions lie in the oceanic basins within 20o of the equator, beneath the zone of equatorial high productivity. The extremely low sampling density in these higher grade nodule regions suggests that priority should be given to exploration in these areas.-Author
