Description
Head and shoulders to left in dark blue coat, yellow waistcoat, buff neckcloth and shirt-frill heightened with white chalk; reddish-yellow hair carefully dressed, pale brown eyebrows, blue-grey eyes, double chin, fresh complexion; pale blue curtain in background.
The drawing is undated but, judging from the sitter's apparent age, should be placed at about 1790. It may even have been intended to celebrate the second volume of his Dictionary of Engravers published in 1786, the first of its kind to appear in England. Humphry became blind and ceased to paint in 1797. A letter from Humphry in the Hornby Library, Liverpool, undated but addressed to Strutt's son, mentions 'the portrait I painted of him' and asks for impressions, especially finished and unfinished proofs in various plate stages, of Ogborne's engraving. Humphry wished to include them in a projected memoir of his life, never achieved but known from a rough draft.

Public domain

This work is in the public domain in its country of origin and other countries and areas where the copyright term is the author's life plus 100 years or fewer.

You must also include a United States public domain tag to indicate why this work is in the public domain in the United States.
The official position taken by the Wikimedia Foundation is that "faithful reproductions of two-dimensional public domain works of art are public domain".
This photographic reproduction is therefore also considered to be in the public domain in the United States. In other jurisdictions, re-use of this content may be restricted; see Reuse of PD-Art photographs for details.
Other versions Line engraving by John Ogborne. An impression in NPG archive is annotated: 'This, the only Portrait taken of him, was presented to the National Portrait Gallery by his Grandson, Capt. H. I. Strutt, FRAS, FRGS, of Southampton, April 1871'. An oval pencil drawing in NPG Reference Collection may possibly be Ogborne's preliminary sketch for his engraving.

Licensing[edit]

Public domain

This work is in the public domain in its country of origin and other countries and areas where the copyright term is the author's life plus 70 years or fewer.

You must also include a United States public domain tag to indicate why this work is in the public domain in the United States. Note that a few countries have copyright terms longer than 70 years: Mexico has 100 years, Jamaica has 95 years, Colombia has 80 years, and Guatemala and Samoa have 75 years. This image may not be in the public domain in these countries, which moreover do not implement the rule of the shorter term. Honduras has a general copyright term of 75 years, but it does implement the rule of the shorter term. Copyright may extend on works created by French who died for France in World War II (more information), Russians who served in the Eastern Front of World War II (known as the Great Patriotic War in Russia) and posthumously rehabilitated victims of Soviet repressions (more information).
