With more of the EFL retained lists now published, we take a further look at some of the names looking for new clubs. Could any of these be of interest to Carlisle United?

DAVID AJIBOYE

Not released, but Ajiboye is among the players made available for transfer by Peterborough United after their failure to reach the Championship through the third-tier play-offs.

With previous club Sutton United, the pacy wide man menaced Carlisle twice, scoring in both wins for the London club against the Blues in 2021/22.

Was a danger when back on loan with Sutton the following season and, if regular starts have not been forthcoming at London Road, could United – who sorely need some pace and dynamism in attack – tempt him north?

NICKY CADDEN

Cadden was a pivotal figure in Forest Green's promotion a couple of seasons ago, and is now on the market having been released by Barnsley.

The Scot is a proven left-sided operator who has hurt United in the past. Will no doubt attract plenty of interest...could the Blues, with their extra resources these days, be in the queue?

JOHN MARQUIS

A well-travelled goalscorer over the years, big frontman Marquis is looking for a new club after being released by Bristol Rovers.

Marquis’ pedigree includes positive spells with Doncaster Rovers and Portsmouth and, at 31, has plenty of football still in front of him.

Might not offer the pace United are looking for to offset their existing line-leaders, but is certainly proven in front of goal and won’t be short of suitors.

JOSH MARTIN

If United are indeed looking to strengthen in wide areas then released Portsmouth man Martin could be an option to consider.

He did enough to win a half-season deal with the eventual League One champions last season.

Former Norwich City prospect Martin was then let go after Pompey’s promotion and the 22-year-old is now looking for a new home to establish himself.

TUNMISE SOBOWALE

Paul Simpson says he is recruiting with a particular style and system in mind and if that continues to involve wing-backs, Sobowale is an available free agent.

He has left League One club Shrewsbury Town after a year with the club.

Sobowale, 25, impressed in Ireland with Waterford United prior to his move to Salop and made 35 outings for the Shrews – a player who describes himself as one with pace, power and directness.

HARRY ANDERSON

Another who offers suitors an option in wide positions, Anderson is available after leaving Stevenage at the end of the season.

The 27-year-old has clocked up a substantial number of games in League One including with Lincoln City and Bristol Rovers.

He ended the campaign in League Two, on loan with Colchester United, scoring two in ten outings, and a permanent switch to the fourth tier could be the best next step for him.

MYLES HIPPOLYTE

One of the more eyecatching names on Stockport County’s released list, the strong-running midfielder was a threat against Carlisle in the 2022/23 League Two season.

He stood out in United’s 2-0 defeat at Edgeley Park and scored in that game as well as in the 2-2 draw at Brunton Park.

The 29-year-old featured 19 teams in County’s title campaign last term and, though now surplus to requirements as they prepare for League One, has plenty of fourth-tier know-how to take to his next club.

MARVIN EKPITETA

The big defender was among the cluster of players released by Blackpool after their failure to reach the League One play-offs.

He spent four years at Bloomfield Road having previously impressed at Leyton Orient.

A Pool player of the season in 2021/22, someone out there will no doubt be eager to make him a defensive kingpin ahead of the new campaign.

CONNOR WICKHAM

A free agent who some fans were urging Carlisle to look at in past times, there could be another opportunity now he’s been discarded by Charlton Athletic.

Well-travelled Wickham, who was with the Addicks for the closing stages of last season, is still just 31 and his recent career path suggests a player who needs to put down some roots again.

United are not short of big strikers but would they still be wise to consider someone of Wickham’s stature?

KANE VINCENT-YOUNG

Carlisle are in need of reinforcements in wide defensive positions, so someone with Vincent-Young’s CV could be worth a look.

He has just been released by Wycombe Wanderers after previous spells with Ipswich Town and Colchester United.

As with certain others on this list, he has been southern-based to date, but would that deter the 28-year-old from a positive project such as one the Blues could sell?

BEN TOZER

Carlisle need to enhance the service for their strikers next season and in particular find a way of making ammunition for a forward with the aerial traits of Georgie Kelly.

Why not, then, consider the missiles released Wrexham favourite Tozer is capable of providing?

The defender has plenty of promotion pedigree with the Red Dragons and, previously, Cheltenham Town, and with that long throw in his armoury, will be appealing to a number of managers this summer even at 34.
