Happy Gilmore 2 officially confirmed by Netflix

‘Happy Gilmore is back!’

A Happy Gilmore sequel has been officially confirmed by Netflix, which will see Adam Sandler reprise his iconic role.

The golf-based comedy has earned cult status over the years, and is one of Sandler’s most successful and beloved films.

It was a box-office hit on its release in 1996, making nearly $40 million worldwide, and cemented Sandler as one of the biggest comedy stars of the 90s.

On Wednesday, Netflix announced that a sequel is on the way.

The streamer shared a post on social media which said: “Happy Gilmore is back! Adam Sandler will reprise his iconic role in a brand new movie coming to Netflix.”

Fans were delighted by the news, with one person writing: “It’s happening!”

Another said: “I hope it’s not a old washed up player who wins a tournament type of story. Hell, you know what, f**k it, I hope it is.”

“I hope it’s just as good as the original,” a third wrote.

Happy Gilmore sees Sandler play an unsuccessful ice hockey player, called Happy Gilmore, who discovers a newfound talent for golf and competes in a tournament to save his grandmother’s home from foreclosure.

He faces off against Shooter McGavin, played by Christopher McDonald, an arrogant star golfer who despises Happy’s lack of proper etiquette and acts as the main antagonist of the film.

The cast also included Julie Bowen and Carl Weathers.

Rumours of a Happy Gilmore sequel have been swirling for a while now, and earlier this year, McDonald said Sandler had shown him the “first draft for Happy Gilmore 2.”

He told US sports podcast The Ken Carman Show with Anthony Lima: “I saw Adam [Sandler] about two weeks ago, and he says to me, ‘McDonald, you’re gonna love this.’

“I said, ‘What?’ He says, ‘How about that,’ and he shows me the first draft of Happy Gilmore 2.”
