Brooks Koepka's Instagram post was (probably) not a dig at Rory McIlroy’s divorce
It’s PGA Championship week. Rory McIlroy and defending champion Brooks Koepka are both coming off wins in their last starts, but that’s not why the Internet is talking about either of them. Instead, the golf world found themselves fixated on the pair’s love lives on Tuesday as reports surfaced that McIlroy had filed for divorce from wife Erica Stoll.
Less than an hour after the McIlroy news broke, Brooks Koepka took to Instagram to congratulate his wife Jena Sims on her inclusion in this year’s 60th-anniversary edition of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue.
On another day, these two stories would seem completely unrelated. And they likely are. Perhaps the timing is purely coincidental, but the Internet, in its ongoing crusade to uncover (or altogether fabricate) conspiracy, immediately connected the two. Sparked by the fire emojis left by McIlroy’s ex-fiancée Caroline Wozniacki beneath Koepka’s post, the flicker quickly became a blaze.
Something or nothing? Nobody, including us, knows enough to say. A guy should be allowed to congratulate his wife on a professional accomplishment without there being an ulterior motive. McIlroy and Koepka are also reportedly friends, albeit on opposite sides of the heated PGA Tour-LIV divide. But Brooks Koepka is still Brooks Koepka, perpetual shoulder-chip wearer and author of one of the most bitter feuds in golf history. So buy it, sell it or put it on layaway. The choice is yours. But no matter the intention or innuendo, let’s hope it leads to some great golf this weekend.
