Jake Gyllenhaal to return in Road House sequel - all the details

Hollywood leading man Jake Gyllenhaal will get to fight again as Prime Video have confirmed Road House will get a sequel. 

The remake of the 1989 Patrick Swazye classic landed on the streaming service in March, and starred Gyllenhaal alongside Conor McGregor, Billy Magnussen and Lukas Gage. 

The official Prime Video X (formerly Twitter) account shared the exciting news with followers, with a snap of Jake as Dalton with the caption: “Road House will reopen” splashed across the picture in bold neon lettering. 

“With nearly 80 million viewers to date, Jake Gyllenhaal is set to reprise his role as Elwood Dalton in a Road House sequel,” the post read. 

In Road House, Gyllenhaal plays Dalton (Swayze’s character in the 1989 film), a former UFC fighter who is lured to a Florida Keys roadhouse in order to help keep out some unwanted customers.

Joining Jake in the reboot was real-life UFC star McGregor, who made his feature film debut as the film’s antagonist, Knox.

The details in Road House 2 are pretty limited at the moment, with no plot details, director or characters announced. At the moment, it looks as though Gyllenhaal is the only returning cast member - but watch this space!

The Road House news was also shared during the Amazon MGM Studios Upfronts, which took place in New York today (Tuesday 15th May), with Jake telling the audience (via The Hollywood Reporter): “I am so ready, like I love this character, I love this world, I love the thing that we’ve created, and I can’t wait to bring more.”

Speaking with virginradio.co.uk and other press at the UK special screening of Road House back in March, Gyllenhaal opened up about starring with McGregor in the film, and also about how his Dalton pays homage to Swayze’s.

“We designed some tattoos that my character wears in honour of him,” the Brokeback Mountain star said. “And also, he was just sort of with me in my mind a lot throughout the process, you know, [as] the character was originated by him.”

Opening up about what it was like to play a role on screen which was so famously portrayed by another actor in the past, Gyllenhaal said: “I think about things in the theatre, you know, we all play roles that other people have played, classics and stuff.

“He made a classic role [in Road House] so I kind of approached it like that, with the intimidation of the fact that he had made a cult classic but at the same time, I wanted to make it my own, and I know he’d be okay with it.

Asked if he’d fancy having a go at any other Patrick Swayze roles in the future, an amused Gyllenhaal replied: “I mean, you know, all of them?!

“Point Break is one of my favourites,” he then revealed. “And then Dirty Dancing is amazing, but I’m not a very good dancer,” he admitted.
