What are the "Creeps" of other artists?

Basically popular songs that are beloved by the general public, but not really liked by actual fans.

I'm not sure if it counts but Born in the USA is both Bruce Springsteen's most famous song and a terrible introduction to Bruce Springsteen.

I think Born in the USA is his most overrated I love his earlier works much better. Although I wouldn’t mind hearing it live as I love his live albums but born in the USA studio just is kinda meh to me

u/Ok-Werewolf-4224 avatar

It’s still totally on message (the US turns it’s back on, and destroys, the working class), just totally misunderstood.

English is my second language and Springsteen in that song isn't that easy to understand to begin with.

I used to hate that song because I thought Springsteen was a "stupid American" who unironically thought the USA was better than everyone else

More replies

As someone who’s not into Springsteen, where should I start?

Born to run. Whole album. Then go chronological

I’d actually start one earlier with the wild, the innocent and the e-street shuffle. It’s loaded with tracks that match or beat the songs on born to run.

E Street Shuffle is so underrated

u/weareallmoist avatar

To be fair it’s also probably his biggest outlier album in terms of his early career. Someone could love that album but not the rest of his discography and Vice versa so is agree Born to Run or Darkness are the best entrance points

The River is a great introduction to all his sounds imo. But any album out of the Born to Run, River. Darkness, Nebraska, USA run are great.

u/Ironicopinion avatar

One I like to suggest to people is Rosalita Come Out Tonight. It’s a very joyous song with a great build up

If you don't like his more upbeat and anthemic rockers I suggest the album Nebraska. It's a big shift musically as it's very sparse. It's just him and a guitar for most of it. It's much bleaker as well and parts of it can get pretty haunting. So if you find you don't fuck with his normal sound give it a try. I'm not a huge Springsteen head but I really like Nebraska.

u/Dmbfantomas avatar

Nebraska is his best album and the absolute worst place to start. It’ll be awesome when you get there though!

Welcome to the real life then, you're in for a fantastic journey

It’s also doesn’t fit the vibe of the album (glory days as well) which is much more dark and atmospheric

Should I Stay Or Should I Go - The Clash

Big Yellow Taxi - Joni Mitchell

Omg for real though, Should I Stay or Should I Go is nowhere near the Clash vibe at all.

I actually frustrates me how that’s their most well known song, especially with albums chalked full of bangers

u/tonymacdougal avatar

Huge fan of Both of those artists and love both of those songs! 🙋‍♂️

u/offpitched avatar

So glad the overall joni fan base dislikes BYT I love her and hate that song, maybe bc I’ve heard so many bad covers

More replies

“You Turn Me On, I’m a Radio” also qualifies for Joni. It’s a smarmy kiss-off to music execs who told her to make something radio-friendly after Blue - and it’s the best-known track off For the Roses, which never gets its proper due because it’s sandwiched between the two most iconic albums of her discography. The rest of the album is deeply lyrical and meditative - it’s akin to the contrast between “No Body, No Crime” and the rest of Evermore.

Fight for your right ( to party) by Beastie Boys

This one particularly hurts because you have ridiculous production masterpieces like Paul's Boutique that nobody's ever heard of but everyone's heard the one ironic song that goes over everyone's head.

Edited

They say it’s ironic now, but that whole album has lines about drugging girl’s drinks, statutory, fucking girls with bats, girls being subordinate, etc… the og title they were made to change was Don’t Be A F*ggot as well. So was the whole album and their actions then ironic or just how college age guys were especially in the 80’s?

Rick Rubin was said that he wanted the Beastie Boys to basically be wrestling bad guys, aka heels, on that album. So there’s a case to be made either way.

u/sharpshootingllama avatar

You can say it’s irresponsible but it’s clearly meant to be intentionally over the top. There’s lines about shooting guys in the head over nothing.

Culture don’t care about shooting guys, especially in rap. Predatory behavior is seen way different now in comparison. Not saying that’s right or wrong, just how it is today.

I wouldn’t say no one has heard of it. Music nerds like Fantano love that album and rank it as their best. It’s from their best selling album, so it’s definitely a lot of folks’s only impression of the Beastie Boys, yes. But I wouldn’t say it’s this underground classic that only the hardest of the hardcore know about.

Yep! Love the BB! Although I loved Fight For Your Right when I was younger, I tend to skip that one when listening to Licensed To Ill.

I dig the Indian-style Windsor Bellephone cover of this

Song 2 by Blur. All Blur fans know it's meant to be a mockery of the American music scene at the time.

u/ImmediateGazelle865 avatar

I think either graham or blur have said that they were just having fun with what was meant to be a slower calmer song and played it fast for the record label reps and they told them to keep it like that, not so much that it was a deliberate mockery of grunge music. I’m pretty graham especially was a fan of american grunge

u/ellasbelli avatar

TIL

They'd just come of a US tour where Albarn swore off touring America because he hated their influence on British pop culture

I thought that was earlier. Their self titled album is very influenced by american alt rock

Blur fan here, I love Song 2 tho. Well clearly it's not their best song but it's a fun lil' banger

It works in album but as an American it means blur will never play here besides Coachella

More replies

it's funny is a ribbing on American Grunge and America took the bait completely.

While this is technically true, they mostly did it out of appreciation for American music. Mostly because they got sick of the Britpop movement that they helped build. After their feud with Oasis & the success of Wonderwall across the world, they became inspired by lofi music, as well as alternative music like Pavement & even the Beastie Boys (if you listen to On Your Own you can hear their influence). It wasn’t really a big meme about grunge music, they legitimately loved that song and were sick of what they had become.

oh I know. It's a parody but an affectionate parody.

Please don't tell me that's what they call themselves

u/lanaisanicon avatar

Well, the alternative is "Raepists"

More replies

It's not that. It's that everyone knows Carly for the song, but it's nowhere near as big among her fans. Like Creep.

More replies

As a raecist, call me maybe is a masterpiece

u/ScroogieMcduckie avatar

no way you guys call yourselves raecists right?

Edited

Proud and true ✊️

Edit: And as a raecist, I too love Call Me Maybe

This is the funniest thing I've heard in a while - partly because I kind of wondered if I was her biggest fan....

DEFINITELY. float on is a great one, but like there are so many better songs. dramamine, custom concern, talking shit about a pretty sunset, teeth like gods shoeshine, trailer trash, bankrupt on selling, i can go on and on

u/call-me-loco avatar

Tbh I've never heard anyone shit talk float on

I know a lot of hipster MM fans who (used to) resent that it took them mainstream for a while

Although as a radiohead fan, I love creep

Not liking Teen Spirit as a Nirvana fan just screams "I'm not like the other girls/guys." Being a contrarian for the sake of it

Unfortunetely that’s how Kurt was so everyone feels the need to hop on with it. Kurt loved the song. Thats why it opens the album lol. He just got sick of it. He also wanted success but then changed his mind when it happened. He was a contrarian and now so are many of his fans sadly

u/damemasproteina avatar

I think he was mostly conflicted.

It's not unheard of for artists to end up getting sick or hating the song they become known for. It's not necessarily hate for their more popular song, but the feeling that people don't appreciate your other (better) work.

There's also wanting fame & success, and then having to live with the reality of fame and success. Not everyone is built for it.

Well no I’m not saying it’s necessarily wrong of him. It’s just weird that “fans” hop on to hate on Smells Like Teen Spirit or even all of Nevermind just because Kurt did.

Hell I'd argue fans copying his opinions is something he wouldn't approve of. Kurt wanted success but in the sense of being an underground legend, not the biggest rockstar in the world. So people deifiying him and not thinking for themselves would probably piss him off.

Empire State of Mind by Jay Z somehow replaced Dirt Off Your Shoulder and I hate it lol.

u/RANDOM-902 avatar

LMFAOO true

From the Blueprint 3 i personally prefer "Run this town" it has one of my favourite Kanye features ever

u/Zacoftheaxes avatar

Empire State of Mind was so perfectly made to be played at major events in NYC and has been ruined by oversaturation. Can't get with in six blocks of Time Square without hearing it.

THIS!!! The literal only reason i hate it so much now. I was like 14/15 when it came out and have heard it 4628748174283847292058283 times since. I used to defend the Blueprint 3… these day i sit in my rocking chair and say get off my lawn.

u/Zacoftheaxes avatar

I don't even live in NYC but visit about 6 or 7 times a year and even I'm sick of it lol.

Kendrick with HUMBLE. Good song, don’t get me wrong, but he has so many better songs

u/jush-v avatar

fr like i get that if a song is gonna go huge especially from a rap artist its more likely than not gonna be an upbeat, hype, catchy song, but like even DNA from the same album fits those categories and is way better imo

u/jush-v avatar

i do realize DNA still has like a billion streams lol but at least nowadays i only hear HUMBLE still being played

Boom Clap - Charli XCX

In fact her most popular songs tend to be her most mid. Also speed drive, boys and that fancy song

More replies
u/Onebigfreakinnerd avatar

she’s my fourth most listened to artist of all time and i don’t agree tbh. i’ll always like her more experimental and newer stuff (Charli is one of my few 10s), but Boom Clap is just stupid fun and it’s lowk a banger

Tubthumping. Both Chumbawamba's best (and often only) known song and by far their worst. I don't begrudge them it though. Excellent though "Pictures of Starving Children Help Sell Records" is as an album I doubt it paid the electricity bill.

All the MGMT big hits from Oracular Spectacular Kids, Time To Pretend, and Electric Feel

all those hits are hits for a reason though. i do wish congratulations got more love though and loss of life is SO good omg

Loss of life is amazing

Good one. Congratulations got absolutely dumped on when it came out and I absolutely love it.

u/AcidChips avatar

Congratulations is amazing. Siberian Breaks is my favorite song from them

Got it on vinyl last year and listened to it for the first time through really good speakers. It's so good.
