'Unusual' solar activity could allow Northern Lights to be seen as far south as Alabama
EIGHT TODAY STARTS RIGHT NOW. GOOD SATURDAY MORNING. IT’S MAY 11TH, 2024. I’M JAY SCOTT SMITH. AND AGAIN AS YOU SEE RIGHT HERE OVER MY SHOULDER BEAUTIFUL BEAUTIFUL START TO YOUR SATURDAY. UNFORTUNATELY THIS MAY NOT EXACTLY HOLD UP. NOW FOR MORE ON THIS. WE SAY GOOD MORNING TO OUR CHIEF METEOROLOGIST, CHRISTINE FERREIRA AND CHRISTINE, THIS IS A GREAT START TO THE DAY. BUT WHAT HOPEFULLY WE CAN KIND OF GET THIS TO STICK AROUND FOR THE REST OF THE WEEKEND. FINGERS CROSSED. BUT I DON’T THINK WE’RE GOING TO GET IT. I THINK WE WILL SEE SOME SOME SUN THIS MORNING, BUT FOR THE AFTERNOON EVENING CLOUDS THICKEN UP, SHOWERS RETURN, SO ENJOY THE DRY WEATHER WHILE WE HAVE IT. WE HAD AN ABSOLUTELY PICTURE PERFECT SUNRISE ONE MINUTE AGO. HERE IN THE YORK SKY CAM NOW IT’S STARTING TO FADE, BUT WHILE THOSE CLOUDS REALLY LIT UP, YOU COULDN’T TIME IT ANY MORE PERFECTLY FOR THE SUN TO POP RIGHT OVER THE HORIZON THIS MORNING. NOW WAS A WET DAY YESTERDAY. LOOK AT OUR 48 HOUR RAINFALL TOTALS. THIS ALSO INCLUDES THE RAIN THAT WE HAD ON THURSDAY, MOST SPOTS PICKING UP AROUND AN INCH AND A HALF NORTH OF THE PA TURNPIKE, AND JUST UNDER AN INCH SOUTH. RIGHT NOW, HIGH PRESSURE IS TRYING TO BUILD IN FROM THE WEST. THAT’S HELPING TO ERODE THE CLOUD COVER. BUT IF YOU LOOK BACK TOWARD DETROIT IN CLEVELAND, YOU CAN SEE ANOTHER FRONT HOT ON ITS HEELS THAT’S GOING TO COME IN THIS EVENING. SO WE DO HAVE SOME DRY TIME FOR YOU TODAY. WE’LL SQUEEZE IN A LITTLE MORNING SUNSHINE. WATCH OUT FOR SOME FOG THOUGH. IF YOU’RE JOINING US OR TRAVELING TO BERKS COUNTY AND THEN UP INTO THE POCONOS, THAT’S WHERE IT IS THE FOGGIEST RIGHT NOW, TEMPERATURE WISE. IT’S REFRESHING OUTSIDE. LOTS OF 40S RIGHT NOW, AND WE’RE ON OUR WAY TO A HIGH OF 62. THAT IS TEN DEGREES BELOW AVERAGE FOR THIS TIME OF THE YEAR, BUT WE’LL TAKE IT AFTER BEING IN THE 50S YESTERDAY. JAY, THIS IS A KIND OF A WELCOME TREAT. AT LEAST IT’S WELCOME TO SEE SOME SUNSHINE AROUND HERE AFTER THE LAST COUPLE OF DAYS OF ALL THIS RAIN. NOW THE BIG STORY ON THIS SATURDAY MORNING IS ONE OF THE BUSIEST STRETCHES OF ROADS HERE IN LANCASTER COUNTY. BEING CLOSED THIS WEEKEND. AND IT’S GOING TO CAUSE SOME DEFINITE TRAFFIC HEADACHES THROUGHOUT THE SUSQUEHANNA VALLEY. SO PENNDOT CREWS SHUT DOWN PART OF THE ROUTE 30, ROUTE 222 INTERCHANGE LAST NIGHT AT 9 P.M. IT’S GOING TO REMAIN CLOSED UNTIL MONDAY MORNING. WE HAD A CHANCE TO SPEAK WITH SOME PEOPLE ABOUT HOW THEY MIGHT BE IMPACT BY THE PROJECT. THIS WEEKEND. OUT OF THE HOUSE EARLY AND, UH, YOU KNOW, MAKE A PLAN TO TO GET TO WORK. ZACHARY SUN IS THE MANAGER OF JUST PRESS PLAY IN THE LANCASTER SHOPPING CENTER. THE BUSINESS GETS A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF TRAFFIC, BUT WITH AN ABNORMAL WEEKEND LIKE THIS, I’M HOPING PEOPLE LIKE IF THEY’RE WAITING IN TRAFFIC, THEY’LL JUST STOP IN THE PARKING LOT AND COME ON IN TO JUST PRESS PLAY. THE STORE IS IN THE SHOPPING CENTER ALONG LITITZ PIKE. IT’S A PART OF ONE OF THE DETOUR ROUTES IN SUN SAYS HE’S ALREADY PREPARING. I’LL BE COMING FROM LITITZ THIS WEEKEND. UM, RIDE UP 501 THE WHOLE WAY. SO I’M GOING TO HIT, LIKE, THE WORST OF IT. I FEEL I’VE BEEN HERE 19 YEARS. WE’VE NEVER SHUT A HIGHWAY DOWN LIKE THIS FOR THIS AMOUNT OF TIME, SO WE REALLY DON’T KNOW WHAT’S GOING TO HAPPEN. AND THAT’S WHY MANHEIM TOWNSHIP POLICE SAY PACKING YOUR PATIENCE AND NAVIGATING NEW ROUTES WILL BE THE WAY TO GO THIS WEEKEND. IF YOU CAN TAKE ALTERNATE ROUTES, EVEN IF YOU FEEL LIKE YOU’RE DRIVING OUT AROUND WHERE YOU WOULD TYPICALLY GO, IT’S PROBABLY GOING TO BE EASIER TO DO IT THAT WAY. THAT WAS OUR MICHAEL FULLER AND POLICE IN MANHEIM TOWNSHIP ALSO SAY THEY HAVE EXTRA OFFICERS ON DUTY THIS WEEKEND. AND WE REACHED OUT TO LANCASTER EMS AND THEY TOLD US THAT PEOPLE CAN EXPECT EXTENDED EXTENDED, I SHOULD SAY RESPONSE TIMES ALONG WITH EXTENDED TRAVEL TIMES TO GET TO HOSPITALS. AND IF YOU’RE DRIVING THIS WEEKEND, REMEMBER THAT THERE ARE FOUR DETOURS IN PLACE. ALL YOU GOT TO DO IS SCAN THAT QR CODE THAT YOU SEE ON OUR SCREEN TO FIND OUT WHAT THOSE DETOURS ARE. PLUS, THERE’S ALSO VIDEO THAT GIVES YOU A TURN BY TURN PATH TO NAVIGATE THROUGH IT. AND FOR MORE INFORMATION, YOU CAN SIMPLY HEAD OVER TO OUR WEBSITE, WGAL DOT COM. NOW WE HEAD UP TO HARRISBURG, WHERE POLICE ARRESTED A MAN IN CONNECTION WITH A FATAL SHOOTING EIGHT DAYS AGO. JEROME COLEMAN HAS BEEN CHARGED WITH MURDER AND POSSESSION OF PROHIBITED FIREARMS. THEY SAY CHRISTIAN WHITE WAS KILLED ON MAY THIRD NEAR A GROCERY STORE NEAR NORTH SIXTH AND WOODBINE. MEANWHILE, IN YORK COUNTY, STATE POLICE HAVE YET TO FILE ANY CHARGES AGAINST THE DRIVER, WHO REPORTEDLY FELL ASLEEP AND WAS DRIVING TOO FAST AND THAT LED TO A DEADLY CRASH IN A WORK ZONE. NOW, THE CRASH HAPPENED ON APRIL 17TH, ALONG I 83 NEAR FAIRVIEW TOWNSHIP. THREE CONSTRUCTION WORKERS DIED AFTER BEING HIT BY A BOX TRUCK, AND THERE’S NOW A MEMORIAL ALONG THAT STRETCH OF 83 THAT HAS THREE SHOVELS TOPPED WITH HARD HATS. I THINK PEOPLE DRIVE BY IT WITHOUT REALIZING WHAT IT IS. WE HAVE MEMORIALS ALL OVER THE AREA COMMEMORATING PEOPLE WHO DIED BECAUSE OF A DRUNK DRIVER. PEOPLE DON’T PAY ATTENTION TO THEM. THEY DON’T KNOW WHAT IT MEANS. NOW, THIS IS ALSO A REMINDER THAT PENNSYLVANIA LAW SAYS THAT IF YOU ARE DRIVING THROUGH AN ACTIVE WORK ZONE, THAT YOU MUST REMEMBER TO TURN ON YOUR HEADLIGHTS. WE HEAD BACK TO DAUPHIN COUNTY, AND INVESTIGATORS BELIEVE A WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA WOMAN WHO IS PRESUMED DEAD WAS WITH A CONVICTED KILLER BEFORE HER DISAPPEARANCE. 54 YEAR OLD TRACY SCANLON WAS LAST SEEN LEAVING A LIQUOR STORE NEAR HARRISBURG ON FEBRUARY 20TH. POLICE SAY SCANLON, WHO IS FROM ALLEGHENY COUNTY, WAS LIVING IN SUSQUEHANNA TOWNSHIP WITH THIS MAN, ANTHONY PROCTOR. NOW BACK IN 1995, PROCTOR WAS CONVICTED OF THIRD DEGREE MURDER FOR KILLING A MAN IN A PITTSBURGH SHOOTING BACK IN 1994. HE WAS PAROLED IN 2005 AND HAS SINCE BEEN CONVICTED OF SEXUAL ASSAULT, DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, AND HAS SERVED PRISON TIME BEFORE BEING RELEASED IN 2018. THAT’S ACCORDING TO COURT RECORDS. NOW, PROCTOR IS ALSO CHARGED WITH USING SCANLON’S EBT CARD. BACK IN FEBRUARY. NO ONE HAS BEEN CHARGED IN SCANLON’S DISAPPEARANCE AS OF YET. WHAT CAUGHT DOCUMENTS SHOW THAT SEARCH WARRANTS WERE EXECUTED FOR PROCTOR’S HOME. WE GO BACK TO YORK COUNTY AND A YORK MAN IS NOW CHARGED FOR HIS ROLE IN THE JANUARY 6TH INSURRECTION, A 51 YEAR OLD GERALD POWELL FACES FELONY CHARGES OF CIVIL DISORDER AND DISORDERLY CONDUCT IN A CAPITOL BUILDING OR GROUNDS. HE WAS ARRESTED BY THE FBI ON THURSDAY AND ACCORDING TO THE COURT DOCUMENTS, HE WAS AMONG A GROUP OF TRUMP SUPPORTERS WHO WERE WRESTLING FOR CONTROL OF A LINE OF POLICE BARRICADES AND BIKE RACKS. POWELL WAS THE ONE WHO DRAGGED THE BARRIER TO THE SIDE, WHICH OPENED A HOLE FOR MORE RIOTERS TO POUR INTO THE COURTYARD AND EVENTUALLY IN TO THE CAPITOL. SURVEILLANCE PHOTOS SHOW POWELL ENTERING THE CAPITOL ROTUNDA WHILE WAVING AN AMERICAN FLAG, AS YOU SEE HERE. BEFORE HE LEFT. ABOUT TEN MINUTES LATER, POWELL WAS IN COURT YESTERDAY, AND MORE THAN 1300 PEOPLE FROM NEARLY ALL 50 STATES HAVE BEEN CHARGED FOR CRIMES RELATED TO THE JANUARY 6TH ATTACK, AND MORE THAN 500 PEOPLE HAVE BE

In fact, the spectacle could be seen as far south as Alabama.

On Thursday, the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center issued a Severe (G4) Geomagnetic Storm Watch — the first since January 2005.

According to NOAA, at least five earth-directed coronal mass ejections were observed and expected to arrive as early as midday Friday and last through Sunday.

"This is an unusual event," NOAA said. "Several strong flares have been observed over the past few days and were associated with a large and magnetically complex sunspot cluster (NOAA region 3664), which is 16 times the diameter of Earth."

What will viewing conditions be like?

Here in South Central Pennsylvania, we will be battling the weather for a chance to see the northern lights. We're expecting rain for most of the weekend. We've posted the full WGAL News 8 Storm Team forecast below.

What are the northern lights?

The northern lights, or aurora borealis, is a captivating phenomenon characterized by colorful dancing waves of light in the sky. When there is a strong enough geomagnetic storm, the aurora can be seen in Pennsylvania.

During these storms, charged particles collide with gases in the earth's upper atmosphere, producing the spectacle.

The stronger the geomagnetic storm or larger the amount of material ejected by the sun, the farther south the northern lights can be seen during a storm.

How you can see the northern lights

  1. Check NOAA's aurora forecast website. It's a great resource for potential viewing times.
  2. If a northern lights viewing is in the forecast, check the WGAL News 8 Storm Team forecast to see if local conditions are favorable. Just because the Aurora is active, that doesn't necessarily mean cloud cover and other local conditions won't interfere with its visibility.
  3. If everything lines up for a viewing, you'll want to maximize the darkness to really enjoy the show. Your best bet is to head to rural areas with very little light pollution. Find a spot, such as a hill or mountaintop, with a clear view of the northern sky and soak it all in.

Northern lights forecast
