A mistake in episode 5 of the Knuckles series

Opinion

I noticed a mistake in the fifth episode of the show. Agent Willoughby claims that GUN decided to trust Sonic, but she also says that they had her plan the fake wedding where they would catch him. That’s not trusting him. This seems like a mistake on the writer’s part. What does everyone else think?

There is no mistake here. Willoughby wanted G.U.N. to kill Sonic, as she doesn't believe that any being with the power of several thermonuclear weapons deserves to live. The difference between her and G.U.N. is that G.U.N. doesn't want Sonic dead, at least until they've studied him more. Willoughby thinks G.U.N. is insane for letting the aliens live at all.

G.U.N. still doesn't trust Sonic. That's why they are closely monitoring Green Hills at the beginning of the series. They've only let him be free because he lives in a fairly isolated community that's easy to keep under control. There's a reason why that G.U.N. agent that Mason sent to the mushroom planet started panicking about Knuckles leaving Green Hills.

The whole point of that scene in episode 5 is to demonstrate G.U.N.'s lack of any real moral compass. They only act in accordance to what benefits them. They aren't letting Sonic and his friends live their quiet lives out of the kindness of their hearts. They just currently benefit more from him being alive than dead. Meanwhile, they have been killing Eggman's close associates without any hesitation. Yeah, it's a pretty dark plot point in an otherwise lighthearted series.

But she said they decided to trust him.

They decided to trust him from her point of view. She sees Sonic as the greatest threat to the planet thanks to how powerful he is. G.U.N. not making it a priority to put down Sonic ASAP is equivalent to trusting him in her eyes.

It's possible things changed, especially when you consider Sonic started sneaking out for his "Blue Justice" thing. The government people were fine just casually keeping an eye on Green Hills, but upon seeing the ruckus Sonic was causing in other areas, they probably saw him as more of a threat.

But the timing doesn’t match up. She objected to trusting Sonic, so they demoted her, and then immediately put her to work planning the fake wedding where they would trap him?

She's summing up her story in just a few sentences so there's a lot of wiggle room as far as the time frame goes. Sonic 2 takes place about 8 months after the first movie, and it's established that Sonic snuck out at least a few times to try his superhero thing. There's still plenty of time for Willoughby to get demoted and later putting together "Operation Catfish".

She didn't mean 'trust' as in Sonic and GUN are now bffs. She meant 'trust' as in 'we're sure enough that he's not going to snap and start killing people in the 8 months it's going to take us to plan a trap for him.' And she was pissed that they were willing to take that risk instead of killing him immediately.
