The character of Forrest Gump immortalized in the iconic movie bearing his name, has intrigued audiences worldwide. While the creators, Winston Groom, and director Robert Zemeckis, never explicitly labelled Gump with a specific diagnosis, speculation about his condition persists.

Online discourse is rife with conjecture from fans and some professionals attempting to diagnose Gump. Although not definitive, there’s a prevailing belief that Gump embodies characteristics of at least two conditions. Despite not being a perfect representation, the movie provides a mainstream portrayal of someone outside the neurotypical spectrum.

Firstly, Gump is often associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Dr. Shinji and Dr. Naomi Ijichi even published a paper in 1996 diagnosing Gump with ASD based on Groom’s novel. Gump’s narrative perspective in both the book and the movie immerses viewers in his unique worldview, resonating particularly with those familiar with ASD. His singular focus on tasks and social awkwardness are hallmarks of the condition.

The second condition relates to Gump’s childhood need for leg braces, speculated to stem from either cerebral palsy or polio. While officially undiagnosed, Gump’s own explanation of having a crooked spine suggests mild scoliosis, adding to his character’s diversity.

Critics have debated the political undertones of the film, with some claiming it downplays significant historical events. However, viewing the narrative through the lens of Gump’s neurodivergent perception offers a fresh perspective. Rather than dismissing history, the film highlights how individuals like Gump navigate societal changes differently, providing a unique viewpoint.

While Groom and Zemeckis may not have had a specific diagnosis in mind, their portrayal of Gump as a character with a different perspective was groundbreaking. Despite its fictional nature, Forrest Gump serves as a relatable figure for neurodivergent individuals, offering a tale of resilience and human connection that resonates across diverse audiences.
