A sub for Christopher Nolanās film āOppenheimerā about J. Robert Oppenheimer & his involvement in developing the atomic bomb. Starring Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., and Florence Pugh. Based on Kai Birdās & Martin J. Sherwinās Pulitzer-winning biography āAmerican Prometheusā.
Was Los Alamos a brothel?
Also I checked the rules before I posted and you guys have the nudity scenes time stamped?! šš¤£
We have the Nudity Scene timestamps in the Sidebar because it was the one of the most common questions we received on this sub.
it's details like this that make the movie feel like a snapshot of the book
That's what I thought when I read it, too.
Yeah this particular detail stood out to me when reading the book as well.
A bunch of pregnant women covers it enough. Itās a 700 page book turned into a movie, did you really expect it to cover everything?
debatable, and that's why it's worth reading the book
You wanted an already 3 hour movie to take a detour to cover the fact that everyone there was fucking each other?
They actually did mention the high birth rates in the movie.
nah, u just mad and zeroing in on this detail out of many
Even physicists are horny little monkeys at the end of the day. Canāt escape our base instincts
Theoretical can only get you so far
Not just that, but to relieve stress. Oppenheimer felt the weight of the world on his shoulders in the race against the Nazis.
Canāt really edit my post but Iām reading through American Prometheus and it is really amazing.
Iām surprised the physicist Lev Landau never really gets mentioned, since the book name dropped a lot of other people.
Prometheus is an incredible book (and yes it name drops just about every prominent physicist of the 20th century). What Nolan did is nothing short of a cinematic miracle that deserved every single one of its Oscar wins (and more).
(For anyone) Iām actually curious if Oppenheimer and Landau ever interacted, and if the two men worked together. I came across a few articles that suggest the two men met at one point but the rest of the literature was behind a paywall. I know Landau was a student of Bohr at one point, but not too familiar with either Landau or Oppen research specifically.
Looks like Landau and Oppenheimer had works related (no collaboration) to astronomy and possibly condensed matter.
Took āMake love not warā to a whole new level
Yeah dude, it was like the Olympics for super scientists.
There was a very high birth rate at Los Alamos. They were working hard and partying hard.
Stress reliefā¦
Groves was BEGGING people to wear condoms
*a pregnant Kitty approaches*
The bulk of the men at Los Alamos were military not scientists but obviously the whole thing skewed heavily male
Ergo if you were an un-married female you probably never lacked for suitors (paying or otherwise).
.....There's also some good bits in that book about how the Military arranged for maid services from the surrounding pueblos to take care of the many young children and in a stroke of real genius many married women often worked (quite a few had grad and post-grad degrees themselves) in the various labs. It was a rather ingenious design that frankly functioned far better than it should have.
"When the world learns the terrible secret of Los Alamos, our work here will ensure a peace mankind has never seen."
Hilarious
Reminds me of that scene from The Dirty Dozen when the officer gets a bunch of hookers in on a bus for the night
