Slow start foils Grove City in NCAA 2nd Round

TROY, N.Y. -- The Grove City College men's lacrosse team closed the 2024 season Saturday afternoon with a 23-9 setback against New England power Bowdoin in the second round of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament, hosted by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Bowdoin (12-5) jumped out to a 10-0 lead on the Wolverines (15-5) and led 15-4 at halftime.

Junior attack Matt Blythe (Mendon, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) paced Grove City with four goals while junior midfielder Kobi Bui (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) and junior attack Zachary Hougan (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) both scored twice. Sophomore defender Andrew Glasgow (Wooster, Ohio/Wooster) added a goal, his second of the season. 

Bui also recorded two assists. Junior midfielders Luke Jayne (Vero Beach, Fla./Saint Edward's) and Trey Zabroski (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood) both had assists, as did freshman midfielder Logan Fox (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Christian). 

Sophomore faceoff specialist Colton Lehberg (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Santa Fe Christian) led the Wolverines with eight ground balls. Glasgow and Zabroski both collected four ground balls. Glasgow, Zabroski and junior defender Zach Furry (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) all caused one turnover. 

Grove City finished the game with 17 turnovers while Bowdoin had 14 turnovers. Bowdoin outshot the Wolverines, 63-36, including a 40-21 edge in shots on goal. Senior goalie Danny Stone (Chantilly, Va./Flint Hill) made 17 saves.

Saturday's game marked the first meeting between the teams. Grove City made its fifth straight NCAA Tournament appearance. The Wolverines advanced to the third round of the national tournament in 2023. Bowdoin reached the national quarterfinals in 2022.

The Wolverines will lose Stone, midfielder Prince Ayivon (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora), midfielder Griffen Agawa (San Ramon, Calif./California) and long stick midfielder Ryan Ledermann (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) to graduation. 

Bowdoin faces hosts R.P.I. at 3 p.m. Sunday in the third round. R.P.I. defeated St. Mary's (Md.) in Saturday's lidlifter, 15-5.
