Boris Ursus campaign rework idea

Warhammer III

In my opinion, Boris' campaign is by far one of the most egregious and least fun campaigns you can currently play. Not only do you start in an area that is, at best, unpleasant climate to your faction, you are also surrounded by numerous enemies. One of these enemies is Archaon, who is not only a pretty busted early game lord himself, he also starts with an army that effortlessly outclasses 90% of the troops you have at your disposal. Worst of all, you can't even spam Kossars efficiently, since your economy is ass, and unless you control an entire province and choose the edict, you're stuck with two recruitment slots. Compare this to the WoC instant recruitment and they'll snowball out of control rather quickly.

While the release of ToD saw the establishment of a new, potential ally in the South with Malakai, it also added two new LL to Chaos factions close to you with Epidmius and Tamurkhan, who will absolutely hate your guts and declare war on you the second they make contact. It's safe to say that ToD overall made his campaign even more challenging, and once again not in the fun way.

Should you manage to pull through, and overcome all these obstacles, there isn't really anything worth mentioning you gain for it in return. You'll end up with lots of near-useless territory that will be bordered by even more Chaos-Aligned factions. It speaks volumes that one of the most common suggestions to make his campaign enjoyable is to abandon his starting position and migrate to Kislev proper, taking Praag as a new foothold. Which essentially defeats the entire purpose of his campaign, where he wants to bring the fight to the Forces of Chaos, and alleviate some pressure from Kislev itself.

A possible solution to this fiasco of a campaign could be both Wulfhart's and Gelt's campaign mechanics. Firstly, instead of having Boris support either side in the struggle between the Orthodoxy and the Ice Court, rather give him the option to ask/demand support from them in the form of funds and units, similar to how Wulfhart can get support from the Elector Counts. You could balance this mechanic by locking higher tier units behind your campaign in the North being successful, and reaching certain milestones. Doing this would keep the challenging part of the campaign, while simultaneously giving you more tools to deal with the strong enemy presence on all fronts.

Secondly, I really like Gelt's mechanic where, after defeating the Burning Wind Nomads, you can choose to stay in Cathay or return the territory, and get the massive buffs from the "Triumphant Homecoming" event. I'd envision something similar for Boris, where you could choose to stay in the Wastes and continue your conquests (ideally paired with some permanent buffs to make settling there less annoying), or return to Kislev itself, and leave the conquered settlements in control of the Orthodoxy or the Ice Court, thus "repaying" the support they lend you during your war.

I am of the opposite opinion, his campaign is one of the more fun ones in the current WH3 state. It's a tough one, but you have more than enough to win it.

Boris is a great melee lord, and his starting army with two tzar guards and two war bear riders is very powerful a few more cossars and (forgot their name) level 1 armour piercing anti-large guys, and you can take out Archeon no problem.

Worst of all, you can't even spam Kossars efficiently, since your economy is ass

yes, you can. I've even maintained two armies on L/VH. You go into the negative, but capturing settlements and battle income more than makes up for it.

unpleasant climate to your faction

you have a commandment for 5 devotion (which is pretty much free for Boris) that completely negates it.

I think his campaign is just fine, and I wish there would be more campaigns in WH3 of similar difficulties, instead of giving you a small doomstack and surrounding you with allies.
