SXSW, the leading festival of culture that emanates out of Austin, Texas, has announced that there will be a new offshoot of the event entitled SXSW London. Due to take place in June 2025, SXSW London will be housed in London’s Shoreditch area and promises to provide "inspiring and thought-provoking keynotes, music showcases, and a look at what's new in tech, gaming and screen."

Beginning in 1987, SXSW has become a crucial event for cultural creatives from across the world, with a large focus on music. The cinematic and TV aspect of SXSW has gained increasing prominence for the industry internationally over the past decades, and is seen by many as an important launching point for new films, especially for more esoteric American fare. 2024 was a particularly strong year for European films screening at the festival (read the article) with world premieres for the likes of UK’s Grand Theft Hamlet [+lee también:

This marks the second time that a fully satellite version of the festival has been set-up, with SXSW Sydney beginning last year. The festival follows in the footsteps of Sundance, which launched its own edition in the UK capital in 2012.

Recently re-elected Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said: “I am delighted to welcome SXSW to London for the first time ever - confirming our place at the heart of Europe’s tech and creative sectors and as a global capital of culture. When I was part of SXSW in Austin in 2018, I saw first-hand the electric atmosphere of innovation SXSW creates and I can’t wait to be part of it again. This is a historic opportunity for London to once again bring the world’s most exciting talent together as part of our mission to build a better and more prosperous London for everyone.”
