Spider-Man has been one of the biggest box office draws in Marvel flagship since the release of Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man movies. However, several factors led to its reboot with the former taking on the titular role. Serving as the hero for two movies, a third installment was a likely outcome back then. However, things were different for his female counterpart.

After Stacy’s tragic death in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Stone has yet to reprise her role again. While promoting her 2014 movie, she was asked whether she felt “FOMO” about not appearing on the third installment, The Amazing Spider-Man 3

“I have FOMO about everything. My middle name should be FOMO. Like, ‘Oh, I don’t want to go out. I’m not going to go. But I want to go! What are you guys doing? I hope nobody goes.'”

Stone’s Spider-Man story served a more grounded narrative, which kicked off with Peter Parker embarking on a quest to resolve the mystery behind the death of his parents when he gets introduced to a new villain, the Lizard. Alongside his love interest, he faces off against the antagonist to save the city.

Whereas, its sequel continues Parker’s journey as a web-slinger who faces new challenges including Electro and the Green Goblin. While both the movies received a mixed response from critics and audiences alike, it was greenlighted for a third sequel, which remains a mystery even now.

With the sequel grossing over $708.9 million (via The Numbers) at the worldwide box office, it surely left many wondering about the future of Andrew Garfield‘s Spider-Man arc. However, the studio had already made their minds about expanding the franchise with a third and fourth installment which was planned to be released in theaters on June 10, 2016, and May 4, 2018, respectively via THR

It is no wonder that the underwhelming performance of the second installment created trouble in Sony’s plans. Not only was it savaged by critics, but it was unable to even gross equal to its predecessor, which led the studio to scrap plans for sequels.

Sony eventually teamed up with Marvel Studios to bring the character to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Tom Holland becoming the new face of the superhero character. Given that Garfield reprised his role once again in MCU’s Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), many wondered whether his on-screen counterpart would return to her character again or not.

During a 2021 interview with MTV News, she revealed having “wonderful experiences making them even though they were challenging.” She also commented on her return as Gwen Stacy, It was really a special experience for me. I feel similarly protective, I feel protective of that version of Spider-Man.”

Since her time in the Spider-Man Universe is special for her, fans can still hold on to a small hope to see Stone resurrect in the superhero world.
