It’s never happened to me before. Now, every time I leave my phone unattended even for a few minutes it gets bricked, or whatever it is that it’s doing. Basically, the screen gets completely dark. I try to click the buttons and nothing happens. I try to turn it off and nothing comes on, my action eventually leads to an automated 911 call that I didn’t know my phone could do. It goes back to normal after I fiddle with some of the buttons some more but no clear pattern what it is.

I bought this second hand from a reputable retailer in Germany last year, it has worked perfectly until now. I don’t have Apple Care for it and I’m not in Germany right now so I can’t send it for repair there. Does anyone know how I can go about fixing this on my own? Could it be an IOS issue because the day I first got bricked I made sure my IOS got updated?

This is very unlikely to haven anything to do with just visiting a website. There’s a few things you should probably start with. First, settings -> general -> transfer or reset -> reset all settings. This won’t erase any data but you will need to rejoin WiFi networks and set any wallpapers again, etc. When the phone reboots, go make sure you’re up to date on iOS (settings -> general -> software updates).

Check in settings -> general -> vpn and device management and look for any management profiles or vpn configurations that you don’t recognize (most people don’t have any, and you might not even see that menu option if you’ve never set one up). If you do see anything you don’t recognize, delete/remove them.

If you still have problems it is most likely hardware related and, again, not from visiting a website. Best bet would be to do an iCloud backup and then a full restore to factory settings (might want to use iTunes/a Mac to do this so you’re installing a completely fresh copy of the OS) and then restore your iCloud backup.

Hardware wise this sounds like it might be a touchscreen problem, but if this is happening only when plugged in I’ve actually seen cheap chargers cause touchscreen issues.

Thanks for the detailed response.

Yes, my screen suddenly got a singular green pixel dot that hasn’t come off or changed color since the day of the pirated streaming site visit. And also, I think my screen leans ever so slightly more green-toned in general now. Quite imperceptible such that I’m not sure if it’s a thing or my eyes are just playing tricks. But I know that my homescreen photo (of my kids) having a slightly green-tinged tone is not a choice I would have made. Is it a hardware issue then in this case?
