1999: Maurice Papon jailed for war crimes

Maurice Papon is jailed for war crimes committed during WW2 on 22 October 1999.

The former French cabinet minister had been sentenced to 10 years in jail the previous year for his part in sending more than 1,600 Jewish people to Nazi concentration camps.

Papon fled to Switzerland after his conviction under a false name, but was identified by a hotel manager and expelled by the Swiss government back to France.
