Jurgen Klopp says injured Liverpool player is now 'ready' to return to training

Liverpool now have just one game remaining of Jurgen Klopp’s tenure, after drawing against Aston Villa on Monday.

The Reds were already secured of third position in the Premier League, with fourth placed Villa unable to overhaul them in the table.

And although Liverpool did well to get themselves 3-1 up at Villa Park, the fact that their season is ultimately already over eventually showed. Two late Jhon Duran goals completed an all-too predictable comeback for the home side.

With Klopp’s final away game done and dusted – and the Villa fans saluting him at full-time – attention now turns to the big finale. Anfield will be full of emotion for Jurgen’s last stand against Wolves on Sunday.

For the sake of the occasion, it would be nice to have as many of Klopp’s stalwarts available to play as possible. And after full-time on Monday, the manager used his post-match press conference to give a positive update on a player who missed the trip to Villa.

Jurgen Klopp gives Andy Robertson update

Injury crises have been an all too common a feature of Klopp’s time at Liverpool. His all-action style has perhaps contributed to the Reds having season’s interrupted by widespread fitness issues.

That has perhaps been at it’s zenith this year, with so many of Klopp’s first-team squad suffering long-term problems.

One of those to have struggled has been Andy Robertson. The left-back has been excellent lately, changing the game at West Ham and scoring in back-to-back matches.

But it’s telling that Robertson has only started 17 Premier League matches in 2023/24. For someone so used to being one of the first names on the team-sheet, it has been a frustrating time.

That continued on Monday, with the Scotland captain noticeable by his absence in the line-up. Joe Gomez stepped in. Thankfully though, as one of the true lynchpins of Klopp’s reign, it sounds like Robbo will be back for the boss’ farewell on Sunday.

“I saw him this morning and he told me he is ready to train from tomorrow on. That’s the situation,” Klopp explained.

Who else is still injured for Liverpool

Although it’s good news for Robertson, not everyone in the Liverpool squad looks likely to make it back for Sunday.

Obviously, Joel Matip and Thiago Alcantara have long-term problems and neither will be ready to go.

Beyond that pair, the only other first-team player who will probably play no part is Diogo Jota. The last update on Jota was before the Tottenham game and flying against common knowledge, no news is often bad news where injuries are concerned.

As another to have contributed massively under Klopp, it would be a shame for Jota to miss the finale, and against his former club, too.

Of course there are still a few days to go and Jota hasn’t been ruled out just yet. But while Robertson can probably now expect to be in the squad, we’d be surprised to see Diogo join him.
