Anant Ambani's Vantara Saves Ailing Mother Elephant And Calf In Tripura

A team of veterinary experts from Vantara, the wildlife rehabilitation initiative launched by Anant Ambani under the Reliance Foundation, has rescued an ailing mother elephant and her calf in Tripura's Unakoti district. The Vantara team responded to an appeal made by a woman, Kuntala Sinha, seeking help for the elephant.

Vantara team travels 3,500 km for rescue mission 

Responding to the email, the Vantara team travelled over 3,500 kilometres from Jamnagar to Tripura within 24 hours for the rescue mission. Upon receiving the distress call, Vantara mobilised a convoy of vehicles, including ambulances and feed trucks, alongside a team of skilled personnel, to provide essential care for the elephants named Pratima and her calf, Maniklal.

What happened to Pratima?

The rescue effort, captured in a viral video, showcased Vantara's dedication and the impact of collaborative action in wildlife conservation. The rescue operation revealed the dire condition of Pratima, with extensive wounds, lacerations, and severe stiffness in her limbs. Additionally, she exhibited signs of blindness in one eye, while her calf suffered from malnutrition. 

Subsequent veterinary care provided by Vantara's dedicated team ensured the elephants received the necessary treatment and rehabilitation.

However, the rescue also highlighted a concerning aspect, as flagged by PETA in a released statement. Pratima and her calf were unlawfully held without an ownership certificate, violating wildlife protection laws and emphasising the need for stricter enforcement and oversight in safeguarding vulnerable species, the animal rights group had alleged.

What is Vantara?

'Vantara,' meaning 'Star Of The Forest,' is located in Jamnagar, Gujarat and was officially announced in February this year. Vantara is spread over 3,000 acres and located in Reliance’s Jamnagar Refinery Complex, which is also the Green Belt Of Gujarat. The area has been turned into a jungle-like environment that mimics the natural, enriching, lush, and verdant habitat for the rescued species to thrive in.
