Obituary Preview: William G. Smith, of Frederick, MD, formerly of Newburgh, NY, entered into rest on Wednesday, May 1, 2024. He was 92.
William was born in Newburgh, NY on May 5, 1931, and was the son of William G. Smith and Edna Clifford Smith.
He graduated in the NFA Class of 1949, and received an AA Degree in construction from S.U.N.Y Delhi and a BS in Civil Engineering from Trine University of Indiana. He served his country proudly with a Naval Construction Battalion MCB3 (SeaBee) during the Korean War in the construction on the Cubi Pt Naval Airbase at Subic Bay in the Philippines.
He was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Deep Foundation Institute American Legion, and the Seabee Veterans of America.
“Bill” as he was known by family and friends was employed in heavy construction specializing in the design and construction of deep foundations for bridges, bldgs., and docks.
He was employed most of his career with Raymond International of New York and later with American Foundations, Berkel & Co. Contractors, Inc., the Millgard Corporation with positions up to Regional Mgr.
Bill was a Project Engineer on one of the first missile bases built in Plattsburgh, NY. He also managed deep foundation projects such as the Revel Casino and the Taj Mahal’s New Convention Center all in Atlantic City along with many other powerplants, high rise buildings and bridges throughout the East, Midwest and South.
Bill enjoyed traveling, college sports and was an avid Notre Dame football fan.
He played the bagpipes with a Michigan Pipe band. He loved sports and played baseball in high school; basketball and baseball in S.U.N.Y Delhi.
Bill is predeceased by his wife and very very best friend, Frances Mustico Smith. Also, by a very special companion later in life, Rachel Chaput.
Bill is survived by daughters Kate (James) Spillman, Pat (Loyal) Ownes and Laurie Smith; Grandchildren Kevin (Linda) Spillman, Molly (Tylor) Spillman, Taylor (Susie) Lanzillo, Nic (Lexi) Lanzillio, Becca (Michael) Stare;Great Grandchildren Annika, Sarah, Tatum, Jo and Murphy. He is also survived by his sister Sharon Leonard, nephew Colin Brievogel and niece Colleen Brievogel.
He was beloved by his family and many dear friends and will be missed tremendously.
Memorial Visitation will be Friday, May 17, 2024 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at White, Venuto and Morrill Funeral and Cremation Service, 188 N. Plank Road, Newburgh, NY 12550 with a funeral home service at 1:00 pm.
Internment, with Military Honors, to follow at Woodlawn Cemetery, New Windsor, NY.

She is survived by her mother and father, Ellen and Joe Puleo; her paternal father, Dave Powles; her children, Alyssa and Jenna Wilson, Elianna and Grayson Powles; her siblings, Joey and Sean Puleo; and her many loving aunts, uncles, cousins, family members, and friends. She is pre-deceased by her sister, Stephanie Powles, who passed away in October 2018.
Jennifer was born in Kingston, NY and was the second of her three siblings. She worked much of her life as a hairdresser and healthcare aid and had a passion for helping people. She grew up surrounded by her many cousins who were like siblings to her. Jennifer loved her entire family, but especially her four kids. She had a great fondness for animals, especially dogs, and always grew attached to each and every one that entered her life. Even through her toughest times she would be sure anyone else struggling would have a place to live and food to eat. Jen had the biggest heart. She will forever be loved and missed.
Visitation for family and friends will be 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Wednesday, May 1, 2024, at White, Venuto and Morrill Funeral and Cremation Service, 188 N. plank Road, Newburgh, NY 12550.

Son of the late Angelo and Ilia (Rodriguez) Martinez, he was born January 21, 1949 in Manhattan, NY.
A long time area resident, he proudly served his country as a Sergeant in the U. S. Air Force. David was a retired Draftsman with McNally Engineering, LLC in Oakland, NJ. He enjoyed playing poker and dominoes with family, and was a Mets and Giants fan. David also enjoyed watching history movies. He also collected baseball cards. Above all, was family to David.
Survivors include his wife Migdalia E. Martinez, of Plattekill. He was predeceased by a son, David Martinez. Surviving sons are Marc and Justin (Hailey) Martinez, both of Delaware; stepdaughter, Nicole Ortiz of Ellenville, NY; nine grandchildren, Caitlyn, David and Blake Martinez, Angel, Victor, Lylia and Joell Garcia, and Armoni, Aundrea Ortiz; several Titi’s and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents and son he was predeceased by his step father, Silverio Cintron, and a stepson, Gerald L. Ortiz, II.
All Services will be private and at the convenience of the family.

A longtime area resident he was a retired Correction Officer, for the NYS Department of Correction at Downstate Correctional Facility. He was a member of the NRA, an animal lover and enjoyed gardening, music and movies.
Survivors include a brother, A. David (Janice) Taylor of the Town of Newburgh; and a niece, Dana Cabrera of Brooklyn.
In addition to his parent he was predeceased by a sister, Sandra L. Cabrera.

Obituary Preview: Elizabeth J. “Betty” Greene passed away on April 12, 2024. Betty served the residents of the Town of Newburgh as the Receiver of Taxes Collector for 28 years and currently as Town Councilwoman. Her career spanned from working at S. Stroock & Co., Central Hudson and as the Court Clerk in the Town of Newburgh. Throughout Betty’s career, she also held the positions of President of New York State Associations of Town (representing all 933 towns in all levels of government) and as President of the NYS Receivers and Tax Collectors Association.
Betty was born on August 25th to Joseph and Mary (Corbett) Schultz growing up in the family home in New Windsor. Betty spent her summers and wonderful times with her Godparents Joe and Hilda Corbett on the family farm in Montgomery. She is predeceased by her sister former Orange County Clerk Marion S. Murphy (Joseph).
She graduated from St. Patrick’s Girls School and Mount St. Mary Academy High School, having served as Alumni President. Betty participated in her faith as a member of Orange County Catholic Club, where she met her husband 60 years ago – Don Greene. She also served as the Leader of Song Music Coordinator, religious education co-teacher and as Parish Trustee at Sacred Heart Church. Betty married the love of her life D. Donald Greene in 1965, having a daughter Mary Beth Greene-Krafft of Cornwall and son Dominick D. Greene (Courtney Canfield) of Newburgh. Betty’s pride and joy are her grandsons Daniel, Ryan and Colin. She is survived by her sister-in-law Rose Elston (Jerry) and nephews Jerry Jr, Charles and David. She is also survived by her sister’s sons Tim and Tom Murphy. Included in this loving matriarch’s family are 2 generations of nieces and nephews, all with a special place in her heart!
Betty loved our community and was a true public servant; as the Town Councilwoman she was the liaison to many departments, the Town of Newburgh Ambulance Corp., Bureau of Fire Safety and the Recreation Department. Also, serving as a life member of the Cronomer Valley Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, President of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Post 1420 and a member of the Town of Newburgh Republican Committee - Woman of Year 1996.
Betty was also active in many community organizations and non-for-profits, former President of the Leptondale Elementary School PTA, Cronomer Valley Jr. Marching Band, a board member of the McQuade Children’s Facility, Newburgh Day Nursery and volunteer of Women of Achievement YWCA, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, American Cancer Society and many others. Betty’s love for others was never ending. Her extended volunteer, government, church and community family will always be a cherished part of her heart!
Arrangements by White, Venuto and Morrill Funeral Home, calling hours will be held at the Cronomer Valley Fire Department Hall, 296 N. Plank Rd, Newburgh on Wednesday, April 17, 2024 from 4 PM to 8 PM.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 18, 2024 with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 AM in Sacred Heart R.C. Church, Robinson Ave, Newburgh with Fr. William Scafidi officiating.
Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery, New Windsor, NY.

Daughter of the late Earl and Ruth (Homan) Rampe, she was born April 25, 1938 in East Hampton, NY.
A long-time area resident, Joan was a homemaker, working after her children were grown as a District Manager for Hickory Farms. She loved cooking and was generous with her time as a volunteer. She was a member of the Maybrook Methodist Church. She enjoyed quilting, sewing, traveling, and camping in the Adirondacks, especially with her grandchildren.
Joan was survived by three sons, Harold W. (Keri) Fogg, Jr., of Tampa, FL, James M. (Mary) Fogg of Ballston Spa, NY and Craig D. (Nancy) Fogg of Cumming, GA; a sister, Anita Harley, of Aiken, SC; a sister in law, Maryann Fogg of the Town of Newburgh; nine grandchildren, Bradley, Ashley, Margaret, Patrick, Kathleen, Brendan, Taylor, Sarah and Brian; three great grandchildren, Eleanor, Brooks and Caroline; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Harold W. Fogg in 2022; a brother, Earl Rampe, Jr.; and a sister, Shirley Burger.
Private cremation has taken place at Cedar Hill Crematory.
A Memorial Service will take place 11:00 am, Saturday, April 13, 2024 at the Maybrook United Methodist Church, 313 Homestead Avenue, Maybrook, NY 12543.

Carol Ann Sloat - July 10, 1944 - April 07, 2024

Obituary Preview: Carol Ann Sloat, of the Town of Newburgh, entered into eternal rest on Sunday, April 7, 2024. She was 79.
Daughter of the late Louis J. and “Tillie” E. (Dabroski) Talerico, she was born July 10, 1944 in Newburgh, NY.
She spent her early childhood in New Windsor until her father was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army. The rest of her childhood was spent in Downsville, NY, a small town in north western NY where her father, a welder, worked on the Pepacton Reservoir. She attended school there where she made many friends that she kept in touch with throughout her life and continued to receive the Walton Reporter. She graduated from the Newburgh Free Academy in 1962 as a member of the National Honor Society. She attended all of her class reunions and considered her classmates as family. A lifelong area resident, Carol Ann was a homemaker while raising her daughter Kim. Earlier she worked for Met Life Insurance Co., and in 1998 she became a part time Title Clerk for 19 years for the Newburgh Auto Auction, which is now Manheim, NY. Carol Ann was a parishioner of St. Patrick’s Church with Father Fernando Hernandez and a member of Oblates with Father Richard Macalear. In 1962 she met the love of her life, John M. Sloat, they later married and remained so for almost 60 years.
She loved New England and traveled frequently with her husband to Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Maine, the Finger Lakes and Longwood Gardens in PA. Carol Ann was a huge fan of cats. In addition to her own four, she donated countless supplies and feed and found homes for many homeless cats. She generously volunteered her time to Newburgh Scats and fed homeless cats on a daily basis. She was a self taught piano player and enjoyed playing music of the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s.
Survivors include her beloved husband, John M. Sloat; her loving daughter, Kim Shutty of Clinton Corners, a brother Ralph (Donna) Talerico; Brother in laws Rodney and Chick, sister in law Elizabeth; several nieces and nephews; and many cousins.
In addition to her parents she was predeceased by a sister, Donna Talerico-Liebgold.
Visitation for family and friends will be Sunday, April 14, 2024 from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm at White, Venuto and Morrill Funeral and Cremation Service, 188 N. Plank Road, Newburgh, NY.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 am, Monday April 15, 2024 at St. Patrick’s Church, 55 Grand Street, Newburgh, NY 12550.
Burial will follow at St. Francis Cemetery, 130 Union Avenue, New Windsor, NY 12553.

Gregory was a retired truck driver with the Town of New Windsor Highway Department. Known by all as a hard worker, he enjoyed working on old cars and going to car shows. He also enjoyed cooking and working in the yard. Above all family was most important.
Survivors include, his wife, Dawn Marie (Vieira) Sherwood; a son, Gregory A. (Ana) Sherwood, Jr., of Milton; a daughter, Lacey Marie (Gregory Reese Jr) Sherwood, of Goshen; a mother in law, Louise Vieira of Washingtonville, NY; one brother, Thomas Sherwood of Little Falls, NY; a sister, Denise Sherwood; eight grandchildren, Gregory Sherwood III, Ian Rodriguez, Xavier Sherwood, Mason Sherwood, Za-Nya Collins, Jordan Collins, Gregory Reese III, and Gavin Reese; many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents he is predeceased by two brothers, David and Timothy Sherwood, and a sister, Patricia Cignarale.

Son of Eleanor (Flanagan) Doderer and the late Carl H. Doderer he was born November 29, 1974 in Newburgh, NY.
Karl was a Senior Maintenance worker with the Water Department for the Town of Newburgh and a tattoo artist at Millennium Tattoo for more than 20 years. He was a hard working and dedicated family man, his girls being the light of his life. From flying kites to building Legos, he always made time for them. An artist of many mediums and an avid collector of vintage toys, he enjoyed spending time at flea markets crafting relationships with the vendors who greeted him as an old friend…often holding aside the best pieces or ones they knew he needed to complete a series to give him first dibs. He loved the outdoors and went camping several times a year with his fishing gear and kayak in tow. He was proud of his garden, growing tomatoes, cucumbers, and peas to share with family and friends. Karl was also passionate about animals, especially his “dumpster kitties”, having rescued many through the years. He leaves behind two at home, Mimzy and Shmoo as well as the dog he swore he’d never get but begrudgingly held great affection for, our corgi Bo. Having a large social network, Karl was loved by many and will be missed by all.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn (Truocchio) Doderer, two daughters, Sydney Nicole and Hanna Belle, his mother Eleanor and one brother, Harold all of the Town of Newburgh; as well as many loving aunts and uncles, several beloved nieces and nephews; close cousins from Michigan and New York and his lifelong friends Ben Smith and Omar Free of Newburgh.
Visitation for family and friends will be 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm on Friday, April 5, 2024, at White, Venuto and Morrill Funeral and Cremation Service.

Survivors include a daughter, Diane Wilkinson and her husband Ronald H. Buckner II, of New Windsor; one sister, Carolyn Terpening of Newburgh; three grandchildren, Meredyth Colotti, Morgan Kish, and Ronald H. Buckner, III; three great grandchildren, Kal, James and Sam.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, George Wilkinson in 1997; one brother and five sisters.
Entombment at Cedar Hill Mausoleum will be private and at the convenience of the family.

A long time area resident, Barbara was a homemaker. She was a graduate of New Paltz High School. She loved cooking and caring for everyone, especially her family. She loved being around people and the more friends and family at the table for holidays the better. She enjoyed music and visiting the casino’s. She dearly loved her grand babies. She was fond of all animals, especially her cats. Barbara was an avid gardener, and loved to travel and enjoy NHRA races with her husband Bill.
Survivors include her mother, Alberta Quick of Poughkeepsie; her beloved husband of 45 years, William “Bill” Smith of the Town of Newburgh; a son Jacob Smith of Middletown; a daughter, Jennifer Smith and her partner Craig Leland of Ellenville, NY; three brothers, Dale Quick and his wife Carol of Gardnier, NY and Gerald Quick and his partner Lori Acree of Gardiner, NY and Richard Sonneborn, Sr. and his wife Karen of Mastic Beach, NY; two sisters, Vicki Jones and her husband Jerry of TN and Anna Cooper of Rosedale, NY; two grandchildren, Taylor Smith and her partner Gary Hornbeck and Rolf Leland; two great grandchildren, Kamryn Hornbeck and Peyton Hornbeck; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her father she was predeceased by a son, Justin, A. Smith in 2019 and a sister, Norma Depuy in 2009.

Obituary Preview: Arnold Lee Sherman-King, a beloved resident of Peekskill, NY, formerly of Bucksport, SC, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, at the age of 79.
Born on January 3, 1945, in Bucksport, South Carolina, Arnold was the daughter of the late Elmo and Mary (Blain) Sherman. She was also the granddaughter of William "Bill" and Lou Blain. Arnold's early education began at Bucksport Elementary School, and she later graduated from Whittemore High School in Conway, SC. She furthered her education and obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Cannon Bible College and Seminary. The year 1986 marked a significant milestone in her life when she wed Joseph Nathaniel King Sr.
Arnold's life was a testament to her deep and abiding faith. During her youth, she was a fervent member of Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church in Bucksport, SC. Her professional life saw her retire as a machinist in 1982 from Red Devil in Union, NJ, but it was her spiritual journey that truly defined her. In 2000, Arnold embraced her calling and became an ordained minister with World of Life Ministries in Irvington, NJ. Her commitment to her faith continued in Fort Lauderdale, FL, from 2004 to 2018, where she became a beloved leader and mentor at First Baptist Church, notably leading senior adult bible studies.
Throughout her life, Arnold exemplified unwavering dedication to serving others. She possessed a passion for music, often singing and playing the guitar. Arnold found fulfillment in her ministry, where she delivered sermons, provided counseling, and offered comfort to those in need. The family held a special place in Arnold's heart, and she cherished the time spent hosting and cooking for holiday gatherings and Sunday dinners. She was particularly proud of officiating two generations of marriages among her children and grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband, Joseph Nathaniel King Sr. of North, NJ; two daughters, Daphne (Raymond) Black of Wallkill, NY, and Donya Johnson of Belleville, NJ; One bonus son, Joseph Nathaniel King Jr.; five grandchildren, and 1 bonus grandson ,Dana Charles (Annie) Rogers, Lamar (Yoli) Bryant, Laval (Peter/Rahj) Bryant- Quigley, Jonathan (Sherryl) Johnson, Dianne (Joseph) Johnson and Terrell Black; eleven great-grandchildren, Gavin, Liam, Priya, Ryker, Grayson, Artemis, Emmerich, Daejah, Kailan, Lavender and Luna; Sisters, Betty Slater of Bucksport, SC, Dr. Annette Sherman Harrison Matthews of Baltimore, MD, Caletha (Bobby) Kinlaw of MD, and, Juanita of MD and her brothers, Nathaniel and Elder Freddy Sherman of Bucksport.SC; one brother-in-law, Fred L Graham of Bucksport SC; and Sister-in-law, Cheryl Sherman of Oklahoma; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. In addition to her loving family, she is remembered by her former husband, John P. Rogers, with whom she shared many life experiences.
Arnold was preceded in death by her parents; her son-in-law, Glenn Johnson; her bonus daughter-in-law, Alicia King; and her siblings, Daniel Sherman, Henry B. Sherman (Leona), Flossie Sherman Spain (William Sr.), Ruthenia Graham, Jane Sherman, Nemo "Cush" Sherman, and Runcie "Ronnie" Sherman.

He served for 25 years with Marlboro Hose Company #1 Marlboro, New York where he held positions of House Officer and Line Officer. He retired from IBM, East Fishkill, New York after 30 years and was a member of the Quarter Century Club. After retiring from IBM, he began a second career as Assistant Sales Manager for Morehead Honda where he was extremely successful winning a National Award with Honda. In 2009, he and his wife moved to Carolina Shores where he was a member of Calabash VFW, enjoyed the beach and gardening. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased in death by two brothers, Michael Justino and Frank Justino and son Christopher Mark Justino.
Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Virginia Venuto Justino; children, Jason Justino and wife Jamie and Thomas Justino and wife Noemi; grandchildren, Darren J. Olympia and wife Ana, Samantha Lasky and husband Steven, Victoria Justino and Anthony J. Meares, and Olivia Justino; great grandchildren, Steven Lasky, Scott Lasky, and Joseph Olympia; brother, Gennaro Justino and wife Brenda; sister-in-law, Kathy Justino; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Survivors in addition to her son, include her father, Edward J. Kenney of the Town of Newburgh; a sister, Jaclyn M. (Nicola Amoresano) Kenney, of Pleasant Valley, NY; several half-sisters and a half-brother; nieces, Milana and Giuliana; along with many aunts, uncles and cousins.
She was predeceased by her mother, Linda Kenney in 2021.

Survivors include two sons, Peter J. Mansueto of Wallkill and Dominick A. (Millie) Mansueto of Queen Creek AZ; one grandson, A.J.; one niece and God daughter, Deanna (Steven) Mirabile; and a nephew Alfred (Traci) Mansueto of Sound Beach, NY.

In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her husband, Robert W. Hyzer, a son, Wynn A. Hyzer, a son in law, Percel Crumpler and two sisters, Louise Steele and Celia Perrier.

Daughter of the late Angelo and Mary (Ponesse) Scalzo, she was born July 31, 1932 in Newburgh, NY.
Thomasina was a graduate of the Newburgh Free Academy in 1949 and went to work in the mathematics department at the USMA, West Point. In 1957 she married, had two daughters, and was a homemaker until she received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in education in 1969 from Mt. St. Mary College. She received her Masters Degree from the State University of New Paltz in 1973. She then went on to teach 3rd grade at New Windsor School for 26 years where she also served as a local union representative for several years. Upon retiring, she moved to Deerfield Beach FL. She then took care of her elderly mother, Mary until her death.
Thomasina enjoyed traveling. She drove cross country one summer from New York to Nevada with a co-worker in her Dodge Omni, spent one summer taking education classes at Guadalajara University, Mexico, traveled to Italy several times locating her extended family for the first time, to Israel once, and to Medjugorje twice on pilgrimages.
She was a devout Roman Catholic attending daily Mass after retirement. She served as Sacristan Eucharistic Minister and lector at St. Ambrose Church and Our Lady of Mercy Church in Deerfield Beach FL. She took perpetual vows as a Third Order of the Dominican Deity at St. Mary’s Campus.
She volunteered during her summers with Meals on Wheels, was a Ladies Auxiliary volunteer at St. Luke’s Hospital, served as Chaplain and member of the Women’s Club of Deerfield Beach, FL and volunteered working with the poor in Appalachia, TN. She loved family gatherings, cooked many Italian dinners for her family, and served as the family historian.
She is survived by two daughters, Thomasina MacFarland and Tara D’Amico; grandchildren, Jacqueline (Aaron) Welch, Ryan (Kailey) Blair, Domenico (Kristy) D’Amico; her beloved great grandchildren, Kaylee, Keagan, Kenzie and Kerryn Welch, Mikayla, Parker and Stefan D’Amico; and a sister Donna Lawrimore.
In addition to her parents she was predeceased by a sister, Rosemary Scalzo, and a granddaughter, Angelica D’Amico.
Visitation for family and friends will be Tuesday, January 23, 2024 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at White, Venuto and Morrill Funeral and Cremation Service, 188 N. Plank Road, Newburgh, NY 12550.
