Rangers’ quest for the Scottish League title suffered a significant setback as they succumbed to a narrow 2-1 defeat at the hands of bitter rivals Celtic in the Old Firm derby, despite Cyriel Dessers hitting target once again.
Cyriel Dessers’ goal proved to be a mere consolation, as John Lundstram’s own goal and subsequent red card sealed the visitors’ fate, Footballrover reports.
The defeat leaves Rangers six points adrift of Celtic, making their chances of securing a league title highly unlikely.
The Light Blues will now shift their focus to the Scottish Cup final against Celtic on May 25th, where they will aim to salvage some silverware from their campaign.
The match began promisingly for Rangers, with Fabio Silva coming close to opening the scoring in the 21st minute.
However, Celtic gradually gained momentum, and Matthew O’Riley’s 15th league goal of the season gave them the lead in the 35th minute.
John Lundstram’s own goal three minutes later compounded Rangers’ woes, leaving them with an uphill task.
Dessers’ 21st goal in all competitions this season, courtesy of a well-worked header, offered a glimmer of hope for Rangers just before the interval.
However, Lundstram’s dismissal for a late tackle on Alistair Johnson shortly after dealt a crushing blow to their chances of staging a comeback.
With only two play-off games remaining, Rangers’ title aspirations appear slim.
Despite this setback, Dessers’ impressive form continues, with the Nigerian striker now boasting 15 goals and three assists in the league this season.
