Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies to play in USA tournament

Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies continue to trailblaze after being invited to the USA for a four-team inter-club tournament featuring hosts Kansas City Current, Spain’s Atletico Madrid, and Vissel Kobe of Japan.

Banyana Ba Style will be the first African team to play in the prestigious invitational event, which enters its third year of existence and is scheduled to take place on 14 and 17 August.

“For us to participate in the tournament is incredibly important as it will give us an opportunity to test ourselves against world-class opposition,” Sundowns coach Jerry Tshabalala told the club’s website.

“And it will give our players the platform to showcase their talent on a global stage.”

The 2024 edition of the Women’s Cup will take place in Kansas City at the iconic CPKC Stadium, which was opened this year as the first privately financed facility exclusively designed for a professional women’s soccer team.

In 2023 Sundowns Ladies won the COSAFA CAF Women’s Champions League qualifier, CAF Women’s Champions League and the Hollywoodbets Super League. Club chairman Tlhopie Motsepe is thrilled for the team to be part of the festivities.

“The Women’s Cup is a special event that showcases the women’s game, while also creating opportunities for the next generation of female athletes,” commented Motsepe.

“Mamelodi Sundowns is a proudly African football club that values the important role that women’s sport plays in inspiring people of all ages and backgrounds.

“We are very pleased to be part of the legacy of this event and look forward to testing our South African style of football against some of the best teams in the world.”
