YA Fantasy, Set in New York or London, has an “UpsideDown” version of the city with an alive car.
Read between 2005-2010, and it was newish. MC is a girl and the book was loooong. I don’t remember much except the girl can access an upside down version of the city, and she befriends a car that is alive. For some reason I’m thinking the car is part lion?
Remembering the book takes me back to laying in my tiny yellow room, eating chocolate covered pretzels into the night. I don’t think I ever finished it and I’d like to.
It sorta sounds like So You Want to be a Wizard by Diane Duane.
I don't think the city was upside down, but Nita and Kit (FMC and MC) became wizards and travelled to another version of New York City and befriended a car that got attacked by other cars and it helped them on their ordeal. Oddly had teeth.
It's the first in an ongoing YA series (Young Wizards).
That was my thought! If OP had the omnibus edition I had as a kid it would have been long. It wasn't new in 2005, though. I read it in the 80s.
I discovered the books in middle school-early high school (so around 2006ish) and I think they had come out with new covers for the paperbacks to match the current releases (at the time and now).
I know there are updated editions, too, with some of the language modernized. So it definitely might be what OP read.
Yeah, so I focused on the description given rather than the timeframe. Reprints make time complicated lol
