Indiana Football Snags Rising Star From James Madison

In response to a pressing need for defensive reinforcements, especially after the unforeseen departure of cornerback Kobee Minor, the Indiana Hoosiers have bolstered their secondary lineup with a promising addition. The team’s coaching trio, head coach Curt Cignetti, defensive coordinator Bryant Haynes, and defensive backs coach Rod Ojong, found themselves in urgent need of augmenting their defensive backfield as they prepared for spring practice.

Turning their attention toward familiar territory for solutions, Indiana’s coaching staff successfully recruited D’Angelo Ponds, a rising sophomore defensive back from James Madison. An alumnus of Chaminade-Madonna Prep in Hollywood, Florida, Ponds entered the collegiate ranks as a three-star prospect and quickly established himself as a key player for the Dukes. Throughout his freshman year, he was a fixture in the team’s defense, making appearances in all 13 games, with 10 starts to his name.

Ponds’s freshman season was nothing short of impressive, with a stat line that included 51 tackles, 13 pass breakups, two interceptions, a pair of tackles for loss, and two fumble recoveries. His stellar performance did not go unnoticed, earning him a spot on the Freshman All-American Second Team. Further accolades included a place on the Football Writers Association of America Freshman All-American team, HERO Sports Group of Five’s Third Team All-American honors, and Second Team recognition in the Sun Belt Conference.

This strategic acquisition by the Hoosiers signifies a significant bolstering of their defensive capabilities, addressing an immediate area of concern while setting the stage for a strengthened defensive performance in the upcoming season.
