Summary

  • Eric Winter teased that Tim and Lucy wouldn't reunite in The Rookie season 6 finale.
  • The actor's comments hint that the episode will still end on a hopeful note for Chenford.
  • The couple will likely reunite in The Rookie season 7 due to popular demand and shared character development.

Tim Bradford and Lucy Chen's relationship is undoubtedly one of the most popular dynamics in The Rookie, so, when they broke up in season 6, many were sad, but fans have to wait a little bit longer until the couple gets back together. The ABC police procedural series chronicles the lives of LAPD cops working at the Mid-Wilshire station, including Tim and Lucy, aka Chenford. When the first episode of The Rookie premiered, Tim was assigned to be Lucy's training officer, so, despite their immediate blatant chemistry, the show had to wait to start their romance due to power dynamics.

The Rookie season 6 finale, "Escape Plan," airs on Tuesday, May 21, at 9 pm ET on ABC.

Lucy started The Rookie as Tim's rookie, but as the seasons went on, she advanced in her career, and feelings between the two began to develop. By season 5, Tim and Lucy knew they were more than friends, but they were in separate relationships, making their situation all the more difficult. Eventually, Tim and Lucy dumped their respective significant others and started dating. Unfortunately, Chenford's relationship wasn't without its faults in The Rookie, and after Tim uncovered past trauma in season 6, he broke up with Lucy because he felt she was too good for him.

The Rookie Season 6 Finale Teases Suggest Chenford Won't Get Back Together

Eric Winter's Comments Don't Bode Well For Chenford's Chances

Following the Tim and Lucy twist in The Rookie season 6, episode 6, Eric Winter, who plays Tim, discussed what was to come next for Chenford during an interview with TVLine. Sadly, the actor's comments suggest that the odds of Tim and Lucy getting back together in the season 6 finale are slim to none. Winter teased:

"[The season 6 finale] leaves a nice sort of, I wouldn't say closure or a guarantee of anything, but it leaves it in a place where there's stuff to talk about."

Winter's quote about Chenford's fate in the season 6 finale of The Rookie implies that the status of Tim and Lucy's relationship will remain the same by the episode's end. However, the actor's comments also indicate that the two characters share a scene or two where they make some progress in their journey to reuniting as a couple. So, fans of Chenford have something to look forward to when episode 10 premieres.

Winter also claimed that the finale wouldn't include a "guarantee" that Chenford would get back together in a later episode. But it seems as if the last episode will leave viewers with the hope that Tim and Lucy will eventually find their way back to one another — it just won't happen in The Rookie season 6 finale. Winter also teased that he and Melissa O'Neill, who plays Lucy, have "some fun stuff together [in episode 10]," including "another great action sequence," as previewed in the upcoming finale's trailer.

Tim & Lucy Need More Time To Work Through Their Individual & Shared Issues

The Couple Hasn't Made Much Progress Since Their Breakup

Although the prospect of The Rookie season 6 ending without a Chenford reunion is disheartening for some, it'll be for the best. Tim and Lucy's relationship has endured several cracks since the season 5 finale, and it takes time to mend those issues before the two are ready to be the best versions of themselves for one another. Since Chenford's breakup in episode 6, the two characters have done little to work through their problems. Individually, Tim started attending therapy to work through his troubles, but he and Lucy haven't come together to address their obstacles as a couple.

Tim and Lucy won't and shouldn't get back together in the season 6 finale as it wouldn't make sense for their development as a couple.

It's going to take more than one hour for The Rookie to develop a concrete path for a Chenford reunion. As a result, Tim and Lucy won't and shouldn't get back together in the season 6 finale as it wouldn't make sense for their development as a couple. Eric Winter's comments surely instill hope in those waiting for a Chenford reunion, but those fans will have to wait until at least season 7 to see Tim and Lucy solve their issues and come back stronger than ever.

Chenford Will Likely Reunite In The Rookie Season 7

Tim & Lucy Won't Remain Broken Up

Eric Winter as Tim Bradford and Melissa O'Neil as Lucy Chen in The Rookie season 6, episode 3.

If The Rookie season 6 ends on a hopeful note for Tim and Lucy, the couple will undoubtedly get back together in the next season. Chenford is too popular of a couple with the show's fanbase for the writers to keep them apart for very much longer. Plus, Tim and Lucy's individual character development is somewhat tied together, meaning the series will likely end with them together, especially after all the build-up to their romance. The bad news is that The Rookie season 7 won't be released until 2025, so, the wait for Chenford's reunion will be long.
