Time to rank the "Police Academy" movies

Discussion

I don't know how many people from the current generation have seen these movies, but these were silly, dumb good times for us born before like 1995 (Sorry if I'm way off and young people love this series), so fellow Xenialls, please help me rank them. I do not count the one made post-1989 lol

If I had to order them, I'd have to say:

"Police Academy" (1984)

"Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol" (1987)

"Police Academy 2: Their First Assignment" (1985)

"Police Academy 5: Assignment Miami Beach" (1988)

"Police Academy 3: Back in Training" (1986)

"Police Academy 6: City Under Siege" (1989)

Yes, people that haven't seen these,, these movies were coming out as fast as a Friday the 13th movies. I'd love to hear feedback on this series and hope that my generation still holds them somewhat fondly. 😁 I watched them from ages 6 - 14 so I know they're bad movies but I love them anyway. They're my generation's Bowery Boys. What can I say? πŸ˜‚

Why do you think I took you to all those police academy films? For fun? Well I didn't hear anyone laughing, did you?

"When Marge told me she was going to the police academy I thought it would be fun and exciting, like that movie, Spaceballs! But instead it's been painful and disturbing, like that movie Police Academy."

If that's what your parents said, then I feel you. My mom hated them πŸ˜‚

Mission to Moscow is missing

I don't count it. It is something totally different and not what I wanted out of the series. It is the "Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" of Police Academy movies to me. I also saw it after I grew out of the series and had a more adult perspective to it.

Then you aren’t a true fan. Mission to Moscow is art, people.

I always found it weird that they took Rated R movies and turn them into cartoons for kids.

β€’

It's because they completely took the series in a different direction because they originally thought the people were watching them were college students, then they found out "Crap, kids are watching these movies. Gotta make them for kids" so yes, they got away from what made them special in the first place.

Cuz they ran the edited version on cable like crazy. That’s how I watched them as a kid

Fair. How can you forget the first time you see Bobcat Goldthwait? He made that movie so amazing! πŸ˜‚

Every time I walk into the grocery store, I feel the urge to go up to the customer service desk and announce "Attention! I need beer up here! NOW!"

Maybe someday, I'll let the intrusive thoughts win.

Jerry Seinfeld's "Comedians in cars getting coffee" episode with Bridget Everett, Bridget mentions Bobcat Goldthwait.

Jerry's attitude shifts: "I don't like him"

Bridget: "I love him!"

Jerry: "you better, because the audience doesn't"

Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol, Police Academy, Police Academy 5: Assignment Miami Beach, Police Academy 3: Back in Training, Police Academy 2: Their First Assignment, Police Academy 6: City Under Siege, Police Academy: Mission to Moscow.

None of the films are anything special but I enjoyed a few of them as a kid. Citizens on Patrol is the closest the series ever had to a 'good' film, while Mission to Moscow easily bringing up the rear. Mission to Moscow is pathetically unfunny. The others in between kinda blend together for me, though I do remember seeing City Under Siege theatrically.

I hope they're not just guilty pleasures for me lol. I think 4 is great, Bobcat Goldthwait makes that movie so special to me. I don't count Mission to Moscow because it is awful, so you'll get no judgment from me on that one.

1, 2, 4, 3, 6, 5, 7

u/Baldmanbob1 avatar

2,1,4,5,3

u/Smeatbass avatar
β€’

No 6?

u/Baldmanbob1 avatar

I honestly can't remember 6! Having a total brain farther! I may actually have not seen it! Did alot of over seas deployments between 88-97 in combat areas, so took me awhile to start catching up on my movies when I got home lol. Going to look it up now!

u/Smeatbass avatar

It's one of the weaker ones because they lost their edge at that point and were made more slapstick because once they knew that the people watching them were us as kids and not 20-somethings πŸ˜‚

So you're pulling rank now? Ain't those movies already rank enough?

7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, then the animated series! then 4 again

I actually only browse this sub once in awhile, so I don't know how often this topic comes out. Apologies if it's done alot.

What? No no You misread me. I just couldn't resist the chance of the double entendre.

*sigh* It never was a good joke if I gotta explain it so, at the risk of overexplaining things: to pull rank is a term related to police or military and being rank is colloquial for being bad. Hence watching the movies in reverse order from worst to least worse, since they were always riding a dead horse.

I’d put #5 above #2, but otherwise I’m cool,with this ranking

Back when I watched them all in order I ranked them 1,3,2,4,6,5,7. I'll be damned if I remember anything about any of the first anymore though.

Man, I have to dig so deep to remember what the sequels were about. When was Zed introduced, was that the third one? And when did Guttenberg leave? I think he did four?
