Member Of 1980 U.S. Olympic Hockey Team Died On Friday

A member of the historic 1980 United States Winter Olympics men's hockey team tragically passed away this week.

Legendary U.S. Olympics star Mike Eruzione, who scored the winning goal against Russia in the 1980 semifinal game, shared the tragic news on social media over the weekend.

Former U.S. men's hockey standout Mark Wells, who wore No. 15 for the American squad, passed away.

"Sad day today for our 1980 Olympic team. number 15 Mark Wells passed away yesterday. Great teammate obviously a great hockey player and we will miss him," he shared.

His family shared the news via a statement. He was 67 years old, according to the statement.

“It's with profound sadness to announce the passing of Mark R. Wells,” the statement read on his Facebook account. “He was so much more than an Olympic hero or ‘The Commish.’ He was a friend to everyone he met. Simply a great man.

“Please allow his family and loved ones the privacy they deserve in this time of great sorrow.”
