Janhvi Kapoor has carved a niche for herself with her impressive performances. However, her journey has not been without its share of challenges and controversies, particularly surrounding her choice of clothes and the objectification she has faced since a young age. As she gears up for the release of her much-anticipated film Mr. & Mrs. Mahi, Kapoor candidly discussed these issues in a recent interview with Karan Johar.
Janhvi Kapoor’s revelations about being objectified by the media came as a shock to many. In her conversation with Johar, she shared a distressing memory from her early teens. “This is an aspect I have been navigating for a long time. I think the first time I felt sexualized by the media was when I was 12 or 13 years old. I went to an event with Mom and Dad and there were pictures of me in the media. I think Instagram or social media had just started to boom and I found pictures of me on what seemed like a pornographic site. And boys in my school were like looking at it and laughing. Yeah, it was just a very weird thing to navigate.”
She added, “But I've been navigating it for a very long time. And again, I'm saying this repeatedly, because I think I'm very apologetic about where I come from and I need to get over that. But I'm sure other people deal with it in a much more different sense, in a much more real and genuinely terrifying sense. I still think the way that I'm explaining it, and my experiences of it are very privileged. But it was complicated.”
Janhvi Kapoor continued, “I think my journey with how I'm presented in the media is still I'm in kind of like a contradiction about it. Because, on one hand, I do like dressing a certain way and I've been brought up in a household where I don't feel apologetic about it. I don't feel judged by it. But then I do understand that there's a sentiment of a sort of character assassination that a girl faces when she dresses in a way that makes it seem like she's comfortable with her sexuality. So I don't know; I'm still navigating it. I don't know how I feel about it. I obviously don't want to be perceived, in a certain way by the media. I want to be taken seriously but it goes against my core values as a feminist also to feel to second guess that if I wear this, people will think I am a certain kind of a girl.”
Janhvi Kapoor is also preparing for the release of Mr. & Mrs. Mahi, where she stars opposite Rajkummar Rao. The film, directed by Sharan Sharma, tells the story of Mahi and Mahima, a married couple whose lives are intertwined with the sport of cricket. Mahi’s dreams of becoming a cricketer are thwarted, leading him to live vicariously through his wife Mahima, who shares his passion for the game.
Mr. & Mrs. Mahi is presented by Zee Studios and Dharma Productions, and produced by Karan Johar, Hiroo Yash Johar, Apoorva Mehta, and Zee Studios, ensuring a powerhouse of talent both in front of and behind the camera.
Mr. & Mrs. Mahi is slated to hit the big screens on May 31, 2024.
