Vasuki & Tharosaurus: Two Ancient Hulks
Professor Sunil Bajpai and post-doctoral fellow Debajit Datta at IIT Roorkee made an interesting discovery. They found a giant snake fossil in a lignite mine in Kutch, Gujarat. It was initially thought to be the fossil of a crocodile. The snake, named Vasuki indicus after the Hindu mythological serpent king, is estimated to be between 10 m and 15 m long. It might be even larger than Titanoboa, another giant extinct snake.The large size suggests that Vasuki indicus was an ambush predator similar to modern anacondas. Its well-preserved fossil vertebrae date back to 47 million years.
These exciting findings were published in Scientific Reports on the Springer Nature platform. And they show that India is a crucial location for studying snake evolution and continental drift. The research team, led by Sunil Bajpai, also found the fossil of a plant-eating dinosaur in Jaisalmer last year. This dinosaur, named Tharosaurus indicus, is estimated to be 167 million years old.
