Derrick Jones' agent on free agency: 'He wants to be back'

- by

Jones is the only rotation player Dallas doesn’t have under contract next season. Right now, the team could offer him $5.2 million via the taxpayer midlevel exception or clear salary to unlock the non-taxpayer midlevel to pay him up to $12.9 million to start. It’s a dilemma for the future, one that neither Jones nor Turner are stressed about now with Dallas still in the postseason. But Jones’ offseason gamble turned him into a starter on a team in the conference semifinals. That’s certainly worth more than the minimum. “He loves his teammates, he loves Jason Kidd, he really likes the front office, (Mavericks president) Nico (Harrison) and Matt Riccardi,” Turner said. “He wants to be back.”

More on this storyline

On Aug. 18, Dallas announced it had signed Jones, the team’s final addition to the roster, at a one-year league minimum deal worth about $2 million. It wasn’t until preseason began that Kidd realized what he had with Jones. In the second exhibition game, Kidd started Jones. He stayed with the first unit virtually all season, starting 66 of his 76 games. “What I saw was his ability to guard,” Kidd said. “It was way before we signed him. I saw him up close in different (games) and always thought, ‘Man, it’d be nice if we could get him on our side.’” -via New York Times / May 15, 2024
Turner expects Jones to test the market, just like anyone in his situation would. They hope Dallas can meet them at a price that makes sense for both sides. “We understand the business (and that) there’s other teams that can maybe pay him more,” Kidd said. “But we definitely want him back.” -via New York Times / May 15, 2024
