A 17-year-old boy is in critical condition after he was shot by a Louisville Metro Police officer Tuesday afternoon.

Around 3 p.m., officers were conducting an investigation at Third and Kenton streets in the Wilder Park neighborhood when they came across the boy, who they also suspect could have been involved in a homicide from last week, LMPD Chief Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel said during a news briefing.

According to police accounts, the boy revealed a gun when approached by officers and attempted to run away. Gwinn-Villaroel said officers tackled and tried to disarm him while issuing commands to drop the weapon, but he allegedly fired before an officer returned fire once, striking him.

Officers rendered aid before the boy was taken to an area hospital, where he is being treated for life-threatening injuries, Gwinn-Villaroel said.
