HIGH POINT, N.C. (WGHP) — May is Family Wellness Month, but it’s not just about physical health. It’s about building healthy family relationships that will form a lasting bond.

In Mommy Matters, six ways you can help improve your family’s wellness.

  • Explore the outdoors together. Take a family walk around the neighborhood. Visit area parks. Those have so much to do from walking trails to splash pads. Unplug, disconnect from phones, tablets, and computers, and spend time together with family and nature.
  • Another good family event is gardening together. Spend time planting vegetables or flowers, then set aside weekly time to tend to your garden and harvest the vegetables. It can be as simple as a container garden, but everyone should know their assigned chore.
  • Schedule family dinner nights at least once a week. It can be difficult to find time when everyone is available, so set a day and time so everyone knows in advance. You can cook some of the vegetables you grew. You can take turns deciding on the menu. Just remember everyone needs to participate in preparing the food as well as cleaning up so no one gets stuck with all the chores.
  • After family dinner, host a family game night. If it’s nice outdoors, take everyone out for a game of basketball. If you want to stay indoors, break out the Monopoly board. Put the phones down and have fun time with the family.
  • Another idea for improving family wellness is to make a memory book. Look at all those photos you have in a box and all those photos on your phone. If you don’t write down names and dates to go with them now, you probably won’t do it. Years from now, your kids will look at the photos and not know who’s in them or where they were taken. Create a family memory book so those memories aren’t lost.
  • If you still need more ideas, volunteer as a whole family. You can clean up your local park or help at a food pantry. That’s not only a good way to improve family wellness, it’s also a good way to teach your children the importance of giving back to the community.
