(6) Firelands vs. (7) Parma Padua Franciscan

What: Division II Northeast 5 district semifinal

Where: Cuyahoga Community College, 11000 W. Pleasant Valley Road, Parma

When: 6 p.m., May 14

Records: Firelands 11-9, Padua 14-7

Firelands’ path: Def. Bay, 10-3.

Padua’s path: Def. Beaumont, 6-4.

Up next: Winner advances to the district final to play the winner of (11) Akron Springfield and (3) Elyria Catholic.

Outlook: When Firelands plays its game, it is a district title contender. However, the ending to its playoff win against Bay resulted in an injury for pitcher Jeannette Crawford. Though she finished the game, she hopped off the diamond with an ankle injury to her landing foot. This raises concerns for Firelands, as she has pitched 116 1/3 of the 130 of the team’s innings this season. Padua was a district semifinalist last year and fell to Elyria Catholic. The Bruins are motivated to make it to the final the second time around. Beaumont, the 16th seed, played evenly with the Bruins for the first four innings at 1-1 and even had a 1-0 lead in the mid-fourth. Then Padua put up five runs in the next two innings. The Bruins are young and finished third in the Crown Conference (5-3 Crown record). Their top five hitters are underclassmen, led by Brae Boguski (.484 batting average). Padua can rely on pitchers Alex Camarati (4.16 ERA) and Samantha Black (3.27). They have a combined 76 strikeouts over 111 1/3 innings pitched. It is possible for Firelands to get the bat on the ball, but it has to find the holes of the defense to score runs.
