There have been a lot of tough cancelations this month for the 2024-25 television seasons. Networks canceled beloved shows with big ratings, including shockers like Blue Bloods. Other shows were canceled with smaller viewer numbers, but in what were still favorites.

One of the shows that ABC has canceled falls into the latter category. Some fans argue it is causing an even bigger lack of diversity in an already generic TV schedule.

ABC Cancels Popular Latino-Led Sitcom

In a disappointing move, ABC canceled one of its most popular sitcoms. The network has announced that they canceled Not Dead Yet after two seasons on the air. This is an interesting move since the sitcom was the most-watched comedy on ABC in four years. However, the numbers dropped in Season 2 and ABC pulled the plug.

Not Dead Yet stars Gina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin) as Nell, a woman who gave up her journalism career to help her fiancé get his restaurant business dream off the ground. However, when the two break up, Nell returns to journalism. However, with few jobs available, she agrees to do whatever it takes to get back in, including writing obituaries. The twist is that she can see and talk to ghosts and writes the obituaries based on their stories.

Season 2 saw Brad Garrett (Everybody Loves Raymond) join the cast as Nell’s boss’s dad. As for the cancelation, the show started with a nice 2.61 million viewers for its original pilot. However, it dropped to under 2 million for the season one finale. The second season rebounded and never dropped below two million viewers again, but it wasn’t enough to save it.

Fans React To ABC Canceling Not Dead Yet

Not Dead Yet fans were not happy the show was canceled. While ABC renewed the comedies Abbott Elementary and The Connors, they didn’t save the Latino-based comedy. It should also be noted that The Connors was only renewed to close its story with a six-episode final season.

With Not Dead Yet now dead, there are only two Latino-led TV shows on network TV. These are Will Trent, which ABC also renewed (starring Ramon Rodriguez), and Lopez vs. Lopez on NBC (starring Geoge Lopez). Fans see this lack of diversity to be disturbing.

  • Mad annoyed that #NotDeadYet was cancelled. The show was damn sweet compliment to #AbbottElementary with a damn good DIVERSE ensemble cast too.”
  • “I swear to god, I’m so sick of trying a new comedy, loving it, totally being obsessed with it, and BAM. Cancelled. Is our taste that bad??”
  • “I hate when they not only cancel good shows but leave you with unanswered questions!”

One person likely disappointed by the news is star Gina Rodrigez herself, so executive produced the show. “It’s found itself to be this really deliciously surreal, bizarre workplace comedy — actually I don’t think there’s much like it on TV right now,” she said (via The Wrap).
