Details of the Switch 2’s hardware components have been unearthed from Nintendo’s shipping and customs records, suggesting a serious spec upgrade. The new device is expected to get 12 GB RAM with 7,500 MT/s, and 256 GB of storage, as well as a microphone. The size without the Joy-Cons will supposedly be 206 x 115 x 14 mm.

Tech leaks from inside sources or the overhasty website upload are neither uncommon nor unwelcome, but the ones we occasionally get from determinedly curious non-insiders – like the latest one about the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 – can rival acts of professional espionage. Users at gaming forum Famiboards have dug through shipping and customs records between Nintendo and its suppliers, and managed to unearth details of key hardware components that should give some idea of the unreleased handheld console’s specs.

The first thing revealed is that the successor to the original Switch (currently $296 on Amazon) will get 12 GB of RAM – specifically, two of Micron's 64-bit 6 GB LPDDR5X-7500 modules. Whether it will be LPDDR5 or LPDDR5X RAM is unclear, but it will run at speeds of 7,500 MT/s. This is a significant upgrade from the original Switch’s 4 GB of LPDDR4 RAM.

The Switch 2 will also be getting 256 GB of UFS 3.1 flash storage built-in, as evidenced by a listing for the Kioxia 256 GB UFS 3.1 module. That gives it readout speeds of 2,100 MB/s, another major step up from its predecessor, whose 32 GB of storage had a 300 MB/s speed.

In line with previous rumours, the Switch 2 will also be getting a bump in the overall size. Based on the size of the outer shell component, its dimensions will be 206 x 115 x 14 mm, as against the original Switch at 173 (239 with Joy-Cons) x 102mm x 13.9 mm. Further, the Switch 2 will feature a built-in microphone, and prior reports that the Joy-Con controllers (available on Amazon) will attach magnetically seem to be confirmed in these findings.

As reported recently, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa has said that the new device will be released sometime before March 2025, so there’s plenty of time to speculate on the specifics. Meanwhile the Switch OLED, launched in 2021, remains the flagship model in the company’s handheld console lineup and is available on Amazon.
