Daniel Coulson, 49, charged after nine-hour standoff with police in Butter Market, Ipswich
A 49-year-old man has been charged after a nine-hour standoff with police in Ipswich yesterday.
Daniel Coulson, of Woodbridge Road, in Ipswich, has been charged with intentionally/recklessly causing a public nuisance and two counts of burglary following the incident in the town centre.
Yesterday, officers were called to Butter Market at around 4.35am to reports of a burglary in progress at Carat’s Jewellers after the alarm was activated.
Another call reported that the male suspect had climbed onto the roof of the building and was climbing over several other businesses.
Police closed off Thoroughfare and Dial Lane as well as parts of Tavern Street, Princes Street and Butter Market.
A number of emergency services were sent to the area including negotiators, ambulance and fire crews.
Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service was at the scene with a turntable ladder.
He was arrested on suspicion of burglary and initially taken to hospital for assessment as a precaution.
He was then discharged and taken into Martlesham Police Investigation Centre.
Coulson was also charged with another count of burglary relating to an incident at a business premises in Woodbridge Road, Ipswich, during the early hours of Thursday, May 9.
Forced entry was gained to the building and a number of electrical items and car keys were stolen from inside and a car was then taken from outside.
Coulson has been remanded in custody and is due to appear before Suffolk Magistrates’ Court, in Ipswich, tomorrow.
