A rotonda on the sea… All we needed was Fred Bongusto’s song in background, today at the start of the 12th stage of the Giro-E Enel 2024. In fact, we kicked off from Senigallia, whose symbols include the famous Rotonda a Mare, a boardwalk built in the mid-nineteenth century and restored several times, an icon of a locality and a part of Italy, dedicated to entertainment and tourism. We are in the Marche region. The electric Giro rightly chose the sea for the start of an up-and-down stage that befits the Adriatic on pedals, bringing the altitude range up to 600 metres in 68, pleasant kilometres. The only climb of the day was a new one for the Giro, Monte Giove (with slopes of up to ten% gradient), nine kilometres from the finish line. This is again by the sea, in Fano, after the totally inland detour that also passes through the medieval Mondolfo, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. A special day in its own way, which from the home town of the photographer Mario Giacomelli and the rapper Fabri Fibra (Senigallia) takes you to Fano Romana with its Arco di Augusto and the walls, but also with the splendid Rocca Malatestiana castle and the Renaissance Bastione Sangallo.
The Senigallia-Fano stage
Already the starting point of the Giro-E in 2019, in its first edition, Senigallia boasts two stages of the Giro, both in 1993: a time trial won by Indurain and the start the following day with arrival in Dozza. Fano, on the other hand, has hosted one start and three stage finishes of the Giro d’Italia (the last in 2012 with Cavendish’s victory) and one finish of the Tirreno-Adriatico in 2018 (Kittel’s success).
After an off-route stretch of almost 15 kilometres, the Giro-E joins the route of the Giro d’Italia for the next 53 kilometres. The altitude profile is quite rough and has a range of medium difficulty. The first hinterland of the Marche presents an alternation of short and dry climbs that will really rev up the engines….

“In Naples it was even more of a celebration than on the other days. I have never taken part in the Giro d’Italia as a professional, and arriving in my city by crossing the finish line of the Giro was something wonderful. It was perfect, also because I won the stage, breaking away at one kilometre and crossing the finish line alone. I’m on my second Giro-E and what I’ve noticed is that the people who come to ride are more and more interested in bikes, as if this experience were also a test to then buy one. Now the fans on the streets are waiting for us, thanks to the fact that there are former champions and influencers in the group, and it’s wonderful.”
City of Sport and Health, an opportunity for young people: in Argenta the series of ANCI workshops at the Giro d’Italia continues.
The second week of the series of ANCI workshops is also drawing to a close, bringing new content every day, always oriented towards the world of young people, to the municipalities hosting the stage starts of the Giro-E.
The next appointment, Friday 17 May at 1.30 pm in Argenta, will address the topic of opportunities and experiences of Municipalities and associations in Emilia-Romagna regarding sport, training and events for the involvement and growth of young people.
After greetings from the Municipality of Argenta and the story of the local experience of sports education in schools, the Sports Delegate of ANCI Emilia-Romagna, CONI Emilia-Romagna and the FIAB regional coordination will speak.
This initiative takes place as part of the broader support and financing program for Italian municipalities under the National Youth Policy Fund, created through agreements with the Italian Department for youth policies and universal civil service of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers.
The general objective of the workshops is to improve the level of engagement of the young people in the valorisation of resources in the area as drivers of sustainable local development, through the common thread of sport and its values.
Also at the Argenta stage start of the Giro there will be the ANCI team, captained by Giorgio Rocca, a former skier, and leading a group of local administrators and ambassadors.
