Mikaela Thiel, a talented young athlete from Brush High School, recently signed her scholarship papers to attend SUNY Maritime College, located just outside the Bronx. Thiel will study International Transportation and Trade while playing volleyball. She chose this major because it allows her to travel and pursue a career in business and finance. The signing ceremony took place at the Brush High School on Tuesday, where family, friends, and volleyball coaches gathered to celebrate her achievement.

It was a proud moment for the Thiel family; Mikaela’s father, Marty, said, “We are very proud of her for never giving up and finishing so she can chase her dreams.”

Brush school and Club volleyball coaches attended the ceremony and said they worked closely with Mikaela.  “We enjoyed coaching her.  Having the opportunity to coach Mikaela throughout her school years has been great, and we are very proud of her.”

Mikaela’s mother, Bridget, said that her daughter’s success was a collaborative effort. “I am very proud of Mikaela and all of her hard work.  We are thankful to the coaches and her teammates for being here today.  The coaches helped her develop her skills, which was a big part of getting her to where she is today.  Her teammates helped her along the way and made volleyball fun and exciting.  I’m excited for her and this opportunity.  Her dad and I are filled with so much joy and pride.   We are so thankful that God has given her this opportunity to play volleyball at the next level.  It hasn’t sunk in yet how far away she will be, but this is her opportunity to spread her wings.”

Thiel is looking forward to this new journey. I’m excited, she said. “It’s a new start, and there are opportunities for me to pursue athletics and academics.”

The Thiel family plans to visit her during college, cheering her on from the sidelines.
