Severe thunderstorm watch expires

ORLANDO, Fla. — Wednesday is a Weather Alert Day. Channel 9 meteorologists are closely monitoring the threat of severe weather in Central Florida. Read live updates below:

5:53 p.m. update

A severe thunderstorm watch issued for Central Florida expired at 5 p.m.

3 p.m. update

A severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect for Central Florida until 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Chief meteorologist Tom Terry said the highest threat of severe weather will be across the southern portions of Central Florida.

Scattered storms, lightning and gusty winds remain the biggest threat with this severe weather.

“Expect on/off rain and occasional storms through the Wednesday evening commute,” Terry said.

He will track the storms live on Channel 9 Eyewitness News, beginning at 4 p.m. Click here to stream it live.

Afternoon forecast: Wednesday, May 15 (WFTV)

11:15 a.m. update

Weather Alert Day: Central Florida is under a severe thunderstorm watch until 5 p.m. Channel 9 meteorologists are closely monitoring the threat of severe weather in Central Florida. (WFTV)

A tornado watch that was issued Wednesday morning for Central Florida expired at 11 a.m.

It was replaced by a new severe thunderstorm watch.

That watch will last through 5 p.m. Wednesday.

“The first batch of storms will exit Brevard County in the next hour,” certified meteorologist George Waldenberger said. “The next batch of storms is approaching from the Gulf of Mexico.”

9 a.m. update

Morning forecast: Wednesday, May 15 (WFTV)

Strong scattered storms are moving over the Orlando metro area.

The storms are capable of wind gusts up to 50 mph.

Areas around Orlando are also seeing heavy rainfall with frequent lightning strikes.

Further development is expected into the early afternoon with another round of storms likely to develop.

6:15 a.m. update

Wednesday is a Weather Alert Day. Channel 9 meteorologists are closely monitoring the threat of severe weather in Central Florida.

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued for parts of Deltona, DeLand and DeBary.

The warning is expected to last until 6:45 a.m.

5:05 a.m. update

Tornado Warnings have expired for Volusia and Flagler counties.

All of Central Florida remains under a Tornado Watch until 11 a.m.

More warnings are possible across Central Florida through the morning, along with pockets of damaging wind, lightning and heavy rain.

A few more storms may still develop by the afternoon, but overall, rain should be tapering off.

4:15 a.m. update

A Tornado Warning is in effect for parts of Volusia and Flagler counties until 5 a.m.

Meteorologist George Waldenberger said he’s watching rotation near Barberville, approaching Ormond Beach and Holly Hill.

3:30 a.m. update

A Tornado Warning for Flagler County has just expired.

A Tornado Watch remains in effect for all of the Channel 9 viewing areas until 11 a.m.
