When one small mistake can end a season during the playoffs, being able to play as a team and play through adversity is not just critical, but a sheer necessity as every round brings a new challenge as teams fight for championships.

Manchester Valley knows this and has thrived so far. For 34 straight games, the Mavericks have come out winners despite facing all types of adversity in the process. Monday night was no different as the defending 2A state champions saw themselves across from the team that gave them their toughest battle of the season.

It was another great test, but once again Manchester Valley prevailed, winning 8-6 and repeating as Class 2A West Region I champions.

“We had some kids handle the pressure real well for us tonight,” coach Shelly Brezicki said.

Early on, it seemed like the Mavericks (16-0) were about to cruise to another win, moving the ball perfectly and jumping out to a 3-0 lead. Taylor Fique found Addison Meyer for the game’s first goal before the girls switched roles and Meyer found Fique for the second.

“Addison is a kid that always wants to do everything she possibly can for her team,” Brezicki said. “She did everything we could have asked her to do, even in situations that didn’t go her way.”

The scoring grew contagious as the Mavericks quickly escalated the lead to 7-1. Emma Penczek found the back of the net, following that up by finding Fique for her second goal. Emelyn Scott and Haylee Bittinger followed suit as the lead quickly ballooned.

Then, in the second half, adversity struck.

Late in the second quarter, a yellow card put the Mavs down a player as the Knights scored the final goal headed into halftime.

Century’s talented scorers got going as the Knights went on a 3-0 run to start the third quarter after Delaney Sandbank turned up the aggression and made her presence felt.

Things looked bound to get worse for the Mavericks when Penczek, a Clemson commit and reigning Player of the Year, was knocked out of the game with an undisclosed upper body injury. The Knights saw an opening now just down two as coach Becky Groves urged her team to stay aggressive on the offensive end.

However, the Knights were only able to put one more on the board the remainder of the game as freshman goalie Josie Colender was lights out for the Mavericks. Colender saved several key shots as the Knights were looking to take advantage of the young goalie, but to no avail.

“I really just worked well with my team the whole time,” Colender, who finished with nine saves, said. “Their offense was a lot of plays and a ton of cuts. All of us working together really helped.”

Tasked with replacing four of their seven starting defenders at the beginning of the season, many laud Colender’s ascension as a reason this team has picked up right where last year’s team left off and at some points this season, looked stronger despite the graduation losses and reliance on younger players.

“Josie is the probably the most composed freshman I’ve had play for me,” Brezecki said. “She has a goldfish mentality where if something bad happens she forgets about it. She plays bigger than herself in many situations and has come a long way.”

With the region clinched and a team yet to be deciding coming to Manchester Valley for what is sure to be a tough state quarterfinal, Brezicki and her team want to continue to work on three things: playing team offense, staying the tight-knit group of girls they are now and of course, overcoming adversity to achieve success.

“We wanted to focus on the three things that we have done well and that have gotten us this far,” she said. “Tonight, we did just that.”
