ELITE 8 BOUND! Women's Tennis Punches Ticket to NCAA Championships With Win Over Sewanee

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – With a 5-0 win over No. 20 Sewanee, the No. 6 Washington University in St. Louis women's tennis team earned a trip to the NCAA Division III Championships, starting May 20 at Dwight Davis Tennis Center in Forest Park.
 
This marks the sixth trip in program history that the Bears have reached the Elite 8.
 
Doubles
The Bears swept doubles to go up 3-0 on the Tigers.
 
No. 17 Karen Gao and Eleanor Archer put WashU on the board, beating Ansley Carpenter and Sarah Livingston 8-1 at No. 2 doubles.
 
Emily Chiasson and Ainsley Heidbreder followed with a win at No. 3 doubles, topping Nicole Nowak and Mariella Congeni 8-7 (9-7) to give WashU a 2-0 edge.
 
Eliana Hanna and Amber Edmonds closed out the doubles sweep with a win at No. 1 doubles, beating Brooke Despriet and Katherine Petty 8-7 (7-4).
 
Singles
Hanna notched the first singles point for the Bears, defeating Livingston 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 singles.
 
Edmonds clinched the match for WashU with a win at No. 5 singles, topping Nowak 6-1, 6-3.
 
Nina Moravek won the first set over Petty at No. 1 singles, 7-6 (10-8) and was winning 1-0 in the second set.
 
Archer won her first set 6-3 before falling in set two 3-6 at No. 2 singles. Gao won her first set 6-2 at No. 4 and the second set was tied 5-5.
 
Chiasson fell 4-6 in her first set at No. 6 and was trailing 1-2 in the second.
 
The Bears await the winner of Amherst and Pomona-Pitzer/Drew to find out who they will face in the first round of the NCAA Championships.
