Losing my mind with Battlestar Galactica in Emby

Hi all,

 I'm a generally-happy Emby Premiere subscriber - this app has been great for the most part, and a big improvement over super-buggy Plex. HOWEVER.

 I recently added Battlestar Galactica to my Emby library. As you may know, "BSG" is a complicated franchise, with content in various categories:

  • The 2-episode miniseries from 2003

  • The 4-season main series which began in 2004

  • A 1-season prequel series ("Caprica")

  • At least two TV movies that I know of ("Razor" and "Blood & Chrome")

  • Various "webisodes" that aired throughout

  • TONS of extras - deleted scenes, behind the scenes, mini-documentaries, etc.)

As of now, I'm in a crazy battle with Emby, just trying to get it to parse ANY of this stuff correctly. The list of problems is pretty long, but these are the main issues I'm struggling with:

  • I've added the miniseries to my TV Shows folder in a folder named "Battlestar Galactica Miniseries (2003)," and the filenames within are "Battlestar Galactica Miniseries 2003 S01E01 [imdb=tt0314979].mkv" and "Battlestar Galactica Miniseries 2003 S01E02 [imdb=tt0314979].mkv" - however, Emby ignores these files entirely and they never show up in my list of shows or seasons or anything

  • I tried turning off the feature which combines shows from multiple folders into one entry, and that seemed to help, except the Miniseries was treated like it was the first two episodes of the main series, complete with incorrect art, incorrect titles, etc., and no amount of prodding it with the correct IMDB or TVDB ID codes would convince it otherwise

  • Also, the Season entries for the "main" series are cluttered with random entries from the Extras folder, and I cannot get it to stop doing this

 I'm straight up losing my mind here. Any tips or suggestions would be really appreciated. Thanks!

So they sort and show proper information on the TVDB website? Are you naming yours the same as theirs?

+1 for naming the same as TVDB.

The miniseries should be in a "Specials" folder in the main series folder, named "S00E01 - Battlestar Galactica The Miniseries (1).mkv" or similar. Razer and blood and chrome can also go in specials, named like TVDB has them, and Emby should know where to place them in the series. The webisodes are also on TVDB in specials, mine are named like this because I have a single file for the whole episode: "S00E10-E19 - The Face Of The Enemy", "S00E23-E32 - The Resistance", etc.

I have all my deleted scenes and extras in an "Extras" folder, but none of those show up. I believe Emby does not support extras for series, only movies, but hopefully that will be added eventually.

Hope that helps!

Also I have Caprica as a separate entry. Not sure if it can be combined.

The Specials folder is pretty much where any movie tied to a TV series app end up, no question. Which annoys me when I would rather they be in a separate Movie folder, but I've long learned to deal with it.

Can.. you not just drag the file to the folder your server pulls only movies from in file explorer? Or do you place movies and shows in the same folder..?

If you separated shows and movies, you could dictate which one goes where.

Alternatively, you could also just make a separate side folder outside of the reach of your usual pull locations and dictate that Movies picks it up.

Most TV movies will have movie data in databases, at least in my experience. If they don't then it's a blank entry and it's a matter of copying and pasting imdb or some fan wiki site lol.

this. it's dependent on how you have your tv library configured in emby's server. if you've chosen tvdb as your primary source for pulling metadata, then look up the show on tvdb and make sure your files and folders are organized according to how tvdb has them structured in their database

if all else fails, you can just identify the items manually and lock them

I had beef with BSG too and Emby is at the mercy of the data sources.

I ended up changing the year for the series to 2005. The mini series wants to be named S00E01 and E02.

Once you get the series identified the extras will go back to where they’re supposed to be.

It must be the way your naming them. They're all showing up fine in my server. Are you trying to add them all at once or one at a time? It might be getting confused of your adding them all at once instead of one at a time and then identifying it. I have the shows in folders like this. Battlestar Galactica - Face of the Enemy. Battlestar Galactica - Razor. Battlestar Galactica - The Resistance. Battlestar Galactica (1978). Battlestar Galactica (2003). Battlestar Galactica The Mini Series. Caprica. The movies are in folders like this. Battlestar Galactica (1978). Battlestar Galactica Blood & Chrome (2012). Battlestar Galactica Razor (2007). Battlestar Galactica The Plan (2009). I have them in one collection and it's fine.

Sonarr shows the miniseries as specials so puting them in the season 1 folder and naming them as S00E01 and S00E01 is what I would try.

This is correct if OP has tvdb as their primary metadata scraper. If they have tmdb as primary, the miniseries is not a special, it's its own series. Also, if they are treated as specials they should put them as s00e01 and s00e02 in a season 0 folder, not in season 1.

Season 0 folder would work too. Emby doesn't really see season folders anyway but by naming them as specials it creates a specials tile. That should help with the OPs issue.

If you think this is frustrating, you should try anime. I had to rename 500+ naruto episodes and nearly 300 dbz episodes. My recommendation for specials and things is name the library folder season 0 and then label the episodes S0E01 and so on. Then what you do is go into emby and change the display name of the folder to “specials” or whatever you want. That makes it mega easier.

Emby does things differently when it comes to extras. Personally, I enjoy it. If a known airdate is given for the extra, Emby will put that episode right where it should be along the main season.

As far as BSG, and other titles:
I learned a LONG time ago to let r/filebot handle everything. This has saved me SO much time over the years . Simply just drag and drop the files in, let it do the queries and rename them as expected in the appropriate drives.

At the moment, I don't have access to my Emby server so I can't tell you precisely how I have this specific show setup (I do have it + all the extras), but I'm pretty sure it's using my default filebot setup. I've included that preset here. You'll need to tweak to your own needs

D:/TV/TV1/Plex/{ny} [tmdbid={tmdbid}]/Season {s00}/{n} - s{s00}e{e00} - {t}
.{vf.replace(
'2160p' : '4k',
'1080p' : 'BluRay',
'720p' : 'WebDL',
'480p' : 'DVD'
)
}.{vf}.{vc}{'.'+lang.ISO2}

This would put the show under D:/tv/tv1/plex /name year tmdbid/season/show-s01e01 - title

I've found this to work in every single case where it comes to Emby. I do agree there were a few issues before i switched to this standard, but this pretty much solves everything

I will suggest you use something called tinymediamanager. It will scan your media and let you pick what its supposed to be and rename it appropriately

This kind if shit is why I use Sonarr to handle naming and organization.

If you have scraping issues, always just go to thetvdb.org and check out the show there - it will tell you exactly how it (and in turn emby with the tvdb scraper) expects the episodes to be numbered.

As a rule of thumb, everything that is not a regular episode will be S00Exx, and listed under "Specials".
