Mike Brown agrees to a three-year contract extension with Kings
Adrian Wojnarowski: Sacramento Kings coach Mike Brown has agreed on a new contract that takes him through the 2026-2027 season, his agent Warren LeGarie tells ESPN. Brown, the 2022-2023 NBA Coach of the Year, gets a new deal with a significant raise.
Shams Charania: Sacramento coach Mike Brown has agreed to a three-year, $30 million contract extension through 2026-27 season, sources tell @TheAthletic @Stadium.
Adrian Wojnarowski: Mike Brown and Kings had briefly tabled talks but both sides were determined to reach a deal that kept him with franchise and landed there on Friday night. Brown returned Kings to playoffs for first time in 16 years two years ago and won 46 games and a Play-In game this season.
Timberwolves boycotted TNT post-game show over criticism of Karl-Anthony Towns, Rudy Gobert
Anthony Edwards was surrounded by a tight-knit team, one with such strong chemistry that it decided as a group that no player would appear on TNT’s “Inside the NBA” postgame show after their victory in Game 4 in Dallas, team sources told The Athletic. The decision was a sign of support for Rudy Gobert and Karl-Anthony Towns, who were the subject of derisive and seemingly personal criticism from panelist and Golden State forward Draymond Green.
Minnesota ownership to keep team competitive despite luxury tax?
Glen Taylor has indicated internally a willingness to pay the luxury tax to keep the team competitive, team sources said. Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez have said they would do the same should they prevail in their fight to buy the team. If either side decided to cut payroll, Towns’ max salary and a frontcourt that also has Gobert and Reid as bigs would get trade machine aficionados cracking their knuckles. Towns has spent all nine of his seasons in Minnesota and said he wants to come back for a 10th.
The Timberwolves were very concerned about the Detroit Pistons potentially swooping in to make Connelly a lucrative offer, team sources told The Athletic, but those fears were allayed last week when the Pistons hired Trajan Langdon to run their basketball operations. There are no other teams with an immediate front-office opening for Connelly, but should he exercise the option after helping build the Nuggets into champions and the Timberwolves into contenders, another team could change course and go after him.
Michael Scotto: The Phoenix Suns are adding Chaisson Allen as an assistant coach to Mike Budenholzer’s staff, league sources told @hoopshype. Allen was previously the head coach of the Wisconsin Herd, the G League affiliate for the Milwaukee Bucks.
“It’s an honor for me to join the Detroit Pistons and I’m excited for the opportunity,” said Langdon. “I have spent considerable time with Tom over the past few weeks and am fully aligned with his expectations for the challenge ahead. The work starts immediately, and I appreciate Tom giving me the opportunity to build on the foundation that has been laid and help this team compete at the highest level. There is great tradition and history associated with this franchise. I’m excited to build on that for everyone associated with the organization and the passionate sports fans of Detroit.”
Tom Gores said the Pistons ran a thorough process, interviewed many worthy candidates and conducted extensive diligence. The club retained executive search firm TurnkeyZRG, including managing director and former NBA executive Billy King, to assist with the search. “What was important to me was finding someone who was a hands-on leader and effective communicator that could connect with people, motivate our front office and deliver results,” Gores said. “I knew Trajan was universally praised and respected around the league, but as I spent time with him, he articulated a thoughtful, detailed plan to create a culture of winning and getting the best out of the talented people we have in our organization.”
