The 'Golden Arrow' was the premier rail-sea-rail route from London to Paris before cheap and frequent air travel killed the market. As an all-Pullman train, following electrification of lines to Dover, it continued to be a locomotive-hauled operation although the bulk of services were by then multiple-unit operated. It last ran in 1972.
E5018 is one of the Class HA, later Class 71, locomotives built 1958-60 for Kent Coast electrification, and was one of those not converted to electro-diesel type (Class 74).
