Trying to ID mystery song - aired on a Sheffield radio station circa 2009

Recommended Posts

Hello - this is a very odd question, I realize, but I'm part of a group of people that try to identify 'lostwave' music - which is music we have samples of, but no attributable artist and that defy traditional search methods (Shazam, lyrics searches, etc.)

One such song was recorded off a Sheffield radio station sometime around 2009 - and many DJs and music collectors have been unable to ID it! I figured it couldn't hurt to see if this sounds familiar to anyone here:

Thanks in advance!

Slightly iffy recording, and also quite a strange sounding song, in that it has the sound of a genre-conforming song but in a slightly clumsy way.

Are you sure this isn't something produced by AI, and someone is just having you on?

Either that or it was something someone recorded in their basement and their mate from Hallam FM played it once as a favour.

From Reddit:

What is known about the song.

OP (mpdsteven, not account12399) recorded this song in the UK during the late 2000s. It is unknown what radio station specifically but mpdsteven suggested that it could’ve been from a Sheffield station since he recorded around that area. Of course, this doesn’t automatically mean it’s a band from Sheffield since it could’ve as well been from other parts of the country. Also this is ALL we have of the song, we are still missing the entire intro despite OP coming back and sharing the full tape recording.

The OP (mpdsteven), judging by the dates the songs on the tracklist were released, he started recording around 1998-early2000s to 2007 and 2009. The only song that stands out from the rest is an acoustic performance of a song that was released in 2011 which has terrible quality (probably bad reception), A Note Two Self - Euphoric Dream. The point is, our unknown song is between two songs released in 2009 on the tracklist, so one can assume the possible year of release is at least at maximum, 2009. Not to mention the other two 2009 songs have about the same quality as “My Pretty Doll”.

It might as well not even be called “My Pretty Doll” and instead an unpredictable title that may or may not be related to the lyrics. We already found quite a lot of songs that match the possible titles (“Another Day”, “Cradle Me”, “Once More”, Variations of the placeholder, etc.) and unfortunately nothing was found or led somewhere (yet), so either the song isn’t on Discogs or is simply with an unpredictable title. I choose to believe the latter since we’re talking about 2009, the band must’ve had some sort online presence for quite a while (eg: MySpace) and someone must’ve added at least one listing of the band with the song.

We’ve believe it’s either Forge Radio (was Sure FM) or Sheffield live!, Although we’ve contacted quite a few people from Forge Radio, who worked at the time, and they weren’t sure

@ReconnezCherie

An answer from a friend who is a font of all knowledge on all things Sheffield music over the years:

"[The] only Sheffield band that it reminds me of from that time is ‘The Cherokee’s’  sounds like it’s recorded to a decent standard and I think they had an album in the bag with potential big backing, but like a lot of great bands things never quite fell into place. Could be someone else entirely tho!!! 😎👍"

Just a further question to add to this,

Does anyone here know ‘Jive Turkeys’, we’ve figured out they’re from sheffield, and the around the right time for ‘My Pretty Doll’. But no audio could be found. Thought it may be best to also ask the Sheffield forum.

Thanks!

I can’t remember them but will ask around.

Jive Turkeys was a club night in Sheffield in the 90s though. Winston Hazell and others set it up and it was massive at one point — selling out the City Hall several times. I think it moved to Occasions for a long time and perhaps other venues.

Edit to say: that’s not to say there wasn’t a band in the city with that name though, of course!

Although that kind of sound did go over the whole of the North of England for a while, it does have a more ‘Manchester’ sound to me than Sheffield (lots of bands in Manchester tried to sound like Oasis for many years after their success).

A few people I’ve asked have suggested asking around Manchester musos to see if they know of the song/band — so probably a (slight) lead there?
