Xander Schauffele made just one bogey for the second consecutive round at Quail Hollow, once again on the par-4 18th, and for the second consecutive day he sits alone atop the leaderboard.

The world No. 4 shot a 4-under 67 on Friday to finish at 11 under for the tournament, four shots clear of Rory McIlroy (68) and Jason Day (67) in second at T-2. Taylor Moore (68) and Sungjae Im (68) round out the top five at 6 under.

“I’m plotting from tee to green really well. My putter doesn’t feel bad. With the resurfacing of the greens it’s hard to get it close on some holes, and it’s not like the property gives you a whole lot,” Schauffele said after the round. “Today I only can think of the drivable par 4 and didn’t hit a great drive there. It was just tough with the wind off the left. And made a mess of the par 5 with that pitch there being like 15 feet short. That’s sort of like the one shot I’d like to have back, and maybe that chip on 18, too. Other than that, if I can go through a day and only nitpick a few shots, you’re doing something right.

“Yeah, another solid day. Felt like I probably could have squeezed a couple more out of the round, but anytime you can go around this golf course bogey free it’s always going to be a decent day,” added McIlroy. “Yeah, look, it’s two solid days. I set myself up for another good go at it this weekend.”

The Tour’s elevated events haven’t always featured the biggest names at the top of the leaderboard, but this weekend in Charlotte should produce some fireworks over the final 36 holes.

Jason Day has made fashion statements and headlines this season after his pivot to Malbon Golf, and his look on Friday caught the eye once again. It fell somewhere around a comparison to a Miami night club owner or a New York City bodega shop owner. The Aussie, however, had some other thoughts.

“I feel like it’s a little bit of like a throwback to some old school stuff, like this is very, I was saying earlier like Tiger Woods on the bottom, Mr. Hogan on top,” Day said after his round. “But you know, the fit is different. Everyone out here has a certain look and it kind of looks or it kind of all blends the same. It’s nice to be able to kind of mix and match some older looks with some newer looks as well, and I feel like I looked okay today.”

The pants are usually baggy and often look a little crazy when the winds pick up. Does that help him tell the direction or strength of the wind?

“Maybe yeah, you definitely know (when the wind is behind) because it just like goes like this,” Day said with a laugh while showing what the pants look like in a heavy wind. “It does take some getting used to, the baggy stuff when it’s windy, but like I’m used to it.”

We’ll just file these away in the “these guys are good” folder.

Nick Taylor was rolling around the turn and made four straight birdies on Nos. 8-11, including this impressive chip-in. After a nice 2-under 69, Taylor sits T-20 at 2 under.

The best shot of the day, however, is courtesy of Sam Burns, who hit a gem of a drive on the short par-4 8th. From 320 yards, Burns cozied his shot to just four feet for an easy eagle and walked off the course at 3 under for the tournament following his second-round 3-under 68. It was the lone eagle on the par 4 of the day.

Cousin Eddie from Christmas Vacation would liken Johnson Wagner to the Jelly of the Month Club, because he’s the gift that keeps on giving. Just like Kevin Hart’s movies and TV show appearances, Wagner will say yes to just about anything for the Golf Channel.

His first viral performance came at the Players Championship recreating Rory McIlroy’s controversial drive. His latest dealt with Xander Schauffele’s favorable drop that occurred during Thursday’s first round of the Wells Fargo Championship.

The content is great, and Wagner deserves praise for his willingness to put himself out there and address the biggest stories any given week on Tour. But this is an own goal for the Tour. Nobody was arguing whether Schauffele had a window to the green. The criticism from fans stemmed from the fact that Schauffele got a free drop after hitting his ball 40 yards offline. Not only that, and with all due respect to Wagner, if he can hit a shot from the brush back into play, then Schauffele, the world No. 4, definitely could as well.

The drop was legit under the rules, but it’s still a bad look that free relief from a Temporary Immovable Object was given in this circumstance.

A day after first-round tee times were delayed for an hour on Thursday, the second round was suspended at 5:29 p.m. ET due to a dangerous weather situation on Friday afternoon and players were pulled off the course. Seven groups (21 players) still had to finish their rounds and play resumed at 6:27 p.m. ET.

The good news for the Tour is that (knock on wood) the weekend forecast is bright. Saturday features a high of 75 with partly cloudy skies while Sunday should be, well, sunny, with a high of 77. Both days feature just a 4 percent chance of precipitation, according to the Weather Channel.
