Last year, we got word that Scarlett Johansson was working on a mysterious Disney+ series with Marvel Studios, and a new rumor is now claiming that the show will be based on The Blonde Phantom...

We bid farewell to Natasha Romanoff in Avengers: Endgame, and while the character did return for a prequel adventure in the Black Widow solo movie, Scarlett Johansson has made it clear that she is officially done playing the hero - but that doesn't mean she's completely finished with the MCU.

During the Black Widow press rounds a few years ago, Kevin Feige revealed that he was collaborating with Johansson in a producing capacity on a "non-Black Widow related top-secret Marvel Studios project," and the actress confirmed that she is still on board during a 2023 interview.

"It is still happening. Yes," Johansson told ComicBook.com during the Asteroid City junket. "It is still happening, [but] not currently because nothing is happening right now. We're all sort of in this holding pattern as we wait out the writers' strike and potentially our own guild strike, and so on and so forth."

"Right before the strike, we were in the middle of developing it, and now everything is at a simmer," she added.

A recent rumor claimed that the mysterious project would be a Disney+ series, and GFR is now reporting that it's going to be based on a relatively obscure Marvel Comics hero named The Blonde Phantom.

Louise Grant, aka the Blonde Phantom, was introduced in the pages of All Select Comics back in 1946 before going on to feature in her own solo series. The character was later reintroduced as Louise Mason in The Sensational She-Hulk comics from 1989 to 1994.

Johansson will produce the project, but there's no word on her potentially playing the lead.

This source has had a few big scoops pan out in the past, but they don't have the strongest track record. However, MTTSH is also claiming that a Blonde Phantom Disney+ series is in development - though there's no mention of Johansson.

It may also be worth noting that Johansson mentioned the Blonde Phantom in an older interview when discussing other characters she was in the mix to play when she spoke to Marvel Studios about joining the MCU as Black Widow.

We'd say this is worth keeping an eye on, at the very least. What do you make of the rumor? Any Blonde Phantom fans out there? Drop us a comment down below.

That’s… different. Naturally, this is sure to upset you fragile mfs but just for your sake, I hope they go through with it ☺️

@FireandBlood - lol I could have made the exact same comment. I don't know who this character is. But if it upsets certain people, then I'll be top of her fanclub 😆

Yea, more women is good but there are 100 other characters who need screen time. I wish they would concentrate on the mainline characters and not the fringes.

@Goldboink - I agree there are better characters. But if Scarlett enjoyed working with Marvel and wants to continue this might the only way she can. It might be interesting, 50's setting, somewhat updated take. I'm all for introducing new-old characters if the story is good. And maybe they think they have something interesting with this. I will wait and see.

As James Gunn proved with GotG it's what you do with it. Same can be said for some of the failures. Ant Man was a winning franchise and a popular enough Avenger and they made a POS movie that was almost unwatchable.

I'm sure it will be great Johansen producing so no loss from Disney and it's an obscure character story might be a diamond in the rough.

I'd love it if they kept the time period or slightly later in the early 50's. Do a noir style mystery. Allows for Peggy and Howard Stark to come back too. Plus it wouldn't be tied to the current storyline, but can provide context in some ways.

@Itwasme - yeah , a puply somewhat nourish series would be cool

Funny you bring up Peggy and Howard because I feel a tone similar to Agent Carter would work for the show.

@Itwasme - Exactly. I think they will. Would be a nice The Phantom or Dick Tracy kind of thing. Might end up being a fun movie. And the character is obscure enough that most people won't be offended with changes. But also possible this is just fake news.

@TheUnworthyThor - yeah

I would like more period comic book projects and this gives up the perfect setup for that…

It would be more street level I feel so you wouldn’t have to worry about the widespread MCU ramifications and could just do a pulpy/nourish Detective adventure series with a romantic component since it has the Clark Kent-Lois Lane gender reversal in the comics…

Her boss Mark Mason has a thing for the Blonde Phantom and has no interest in Louise herself who is attracted to him.

They basically already did Blonde Phantom with Agent Carter.
GeneralZod
GeneralZod - 5/14/2024, 6:13 PM
@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - Nah, this is a very different character -- much more film noir-esque than government-operated espionage. But it will be around that same post-WWII period, so that part will be similar. But, that was one of the things that made Agent Carter (at least S1 set in NYC) so good!

Come on! This'll be public domain in a heartbeat.

Megacorporations lissenup! If you wanna stay on top of the shit heap rubbing up in all that money, then lissen:

Focus on IP.

IP is shit we can't get from ANYBODY ELSE. I can get two blonde phantoms next door for half the price and they gits their titties out. What can I only get from Disney?
FireandBlood
FireandBlood - 5/14/2024, 2:46 PM
@ObserverIO - All the more reason for them to do it. One thing about Disney, if they tackle public domain, their version becomes de facto.

@ObserverIO - A character like that doesn't realy make much difference if public domain or not as anyone can already do a femme fatale non-super powered crime fighter, many already have done so, and no advantages for anyone to use the name of an obscure Marvel character few nerds even remember exists.

Cashing in on public domain is only thing if a known character with a huge fanbase and has aspects that make them more unique than secretary who puts on a domino mask to fight crime. We are at a point now when even the big A list characters are entering public domain so...

Interesting if true…

Since ScarJo said that she had talked to Marvel in the past about playing the character then maybe it resonated with her till now when she decided to develop a show based on the character?.

I would be down for it though I hope it’s a period piece and has a pulpy feel to it akin to something like Agent Carter..

I also wonder if this could potentially tie into She Hulk or such given that the character appeared in that series as an older woman who would be Jen’s secretary I think (her daughter would then take on the identity briefly).

So could the Blonde Phantom figure into a Steve Rogers Nomad TV show? ie. he becomes Nomad after returning the stones once he gets back to Peggy's timeline as he just can't quit disliking bullies.

So Iger keeps telling us they've learned their lesson on why Marvel has imploded

'Less content and more popular characters paying audience actually wants to see'

So what does Marvel do

A new Disney+ show about Blonde Phantom

FireandBlood
FireandBlood - 5/14/2024, 2:54 PM
@WakandaTech - We’re getting 1 show this year, two animated shows (X-Men and Coogler’s Wakanda) and a movie. Next year we’ve got Cap 4, Thunderbolts* and Daredevil confirmed.

They’ve learned.

eagc1995 - 5/14/2024, 8:34 PM
@WakandaTech - Remember this project was in development before Iger came back.

Also Marvel shouldn't just stick with their big guns, if they did, we would've never gotten Guardians of the Galaxy, which were likewise characters nobody was asking about at the time.
