Lions News: Jared Goff Expected To Recieve Astonishing Contract Extention From Detroit

Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff could be next in line to sign a mega contract. According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, the Lions are reportedly ready to commit to Goff long-term and strike a mega deal with the three-time Pro Bowler.

Fowler reported on SportsCenter on Sunday.

"The Lions are on record that Jared Goff, signing him to an extension, is a 'high priority' so they are working on this," Fowler said. "The feeling around the league from the people I've talked to is that Goff will be the next quarterback to score that megadeal. You've got Tua Tagovailoa in Miami, Trevor Lawrence in Jacksonville, and some others like maybe Dak Prescott down the road but Goff and the Lions seem to be the closest. Nothing is imminent right now but they insist this is something they've been talking about, and the Lions are committed to keeping their core together. Amon-Ra St. Brown kept him on a huge four-year deal, and right tackle Penei Sewell four-year deal, so Goff could be the next with a four-year deal. The market is pretty clear, though. You're looking at $50-plus million for a lot of these quarterbacks per year. We'll see how far the Lions are willing to go."

The former No. 1 overall pick in 2016 could see a significant flow of cash come his way. Although he is not on the tier of quarterbacks like Lamar Jackson, Joe Burrow, Justin Herbert, and Jalen Hurts, who are making more than $50 million per season, the Lions want to keep him and think highly of him.

The 29-year-old quarterback is set to make $22.3 million in base salary next season. According to Spotrac, his total cash earnings rank him as 17th among quarterbacks. Goff is behind guys like Derek Carr, Deshaun Watson, and Kirk Cousins.

Goff is closer to a guy like Cousins, and even he is making $45 million per season and he's coming off an Achilles tear. If that's what the market is set at, it's only fair Goff reaches that number or surpasses it. The Lions are showing that they view No. 16 as their franchise quarterback. According to executive vice president and general manager of the Detroit Lions, Brad Holmes, it's a matter of 'when' not 'if' a deal gets done between both sides.

"It's a high priority for us and both sides are working really, really hard," Holmes told 97.1 The Ticket last week. "These things just take time, you know."

This won't be the first time Goff signs a mega deal. Prior to the 2019 season, when he was playing for the Los Angeles Rams, the team picked up the fifth-year option on Goff's contract. Months later, he agreed to a four-year extension worth $134 million with $110 million guaranteed. It was an NFL record for the most guaranteed money in a contract at the time. Kansas City Chiefs quarterback and superstar Patrick Mahomes surpassed that in number in 2020.

The Rams traded Goff to Detroit in March 2021, along with a 2022 and 2023 first-round pick and a 2021 third-round pick for quarterback Matthew Stafford.

Goff will enter his fourth season as the Lions quarterback, and all indications show he will be around for a long time in the Motor City. The Lions have already signed All-Pro wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown and All-Pro offensive tackle Penei Sewell to massive long-term contracts this offseason.

UPDATE: Jared Goff has agreed to a four-year extension worth $212 million and $170 million guaranteed. Goff is now the second highest-paid quarterback in the NFL.
