Meet Cooper Flagg, the next ‘White Duke villain’ and a potential No. 1 pick

Flagg is the top prospect in the 2025 NBA draft class and has overshadowed this year’s relatively weak crop, which will be in the spotlight during Sunday’s draft lottery

By Ben Golliver

Cooper Flagg will play at Duke next season, then is expected to be the top prospect in the 2025 NBA draft.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Cooper Flagg, America’s most coveted teenage basketball player, faced the biggest decision of his decade-long ascent from central Maine to the top of NBA draft boards.

The 17-year-old prodigy proved to be exceptionally ambitious in rising from rural Newport, which is closer to Canada going northwest or northeast, than it is to Boston, which is 200 miles south. After winning a state championship as a freshman, Flagg transferred to Montverde Academy, a basketball powerhouse near Orlando. Even before he led Montverde to a 33-0 record and a national championship this past season, the polished 6-foot-9 forward reclassified so he could graduate in three years and fast track his NBA journey. Now, he needed to pick a college.

But Duke was the school Flagg’s mother, Kelly, had followed so closely as a high school basketball player that she wore No. 32 as a tribute to Christian Laettner. Blue Devils Coach Jon Scheyer built a strong bond with Flagg on the recruiting trail, and the school’s recent track record of No. 1 picks, such as Zion Williamson and Paolo Banchero, was a big draw. What’s more, Jayson Tatum’s season in Durham was a formative viewing experience for Flagg, a third-generation Boston Celtics fan.

There was one catch: Duke is Duke, for better and worse.

“We definitely had that conversation with Cooper and explained the gravity of the situation,” Kelly Flagg said. “If you choose this school, you’re about to be the greatest, hated White Duke villain.”

Thanks to his highflying offense, hard-nosed defense and competitive drive, Flagg is the top prospect in the 2025 NBA draft class and has overshadowed this year’s relatively weak crop, which will be in the spotlight when the annual draft lottery is held Sunday afternoon to determine which team will get the top pick next month. If Flagg is selected first next year as expected, he will become the first White American No. 1 pick since Indiana’s Kent Benson in 1977.

“That’s a surreal feeling, knowing that’s history in a way,” Flagg said. “I definitely take pride in that, but I take even more pride in coming from Maine. [Going first] is something every kid dreams of. I’m definitely working toward that.”

Duke, he concluded, would best prepare him for the challenges of NBA life. Playing on that stage was worth the stereotypes and the heckling.

“Bring it,” Kelly Flagg remembered her son saying at the family meeting. “He’s always been fueled by negativity from the opposition. Every gym he went to his freshman year, he heard the ‘overrated’ chants. Then he would do something spectacular, and the chant would end abruptly. That’s just his personality. If you’re a basketball player, the color of your skin shouldn’t make a difference. If he can play, he can play.”

Make no mistake: Flagg can play. …

At a time when international players have won the past six NBA MVP awards, Flagg has emerged as an all-world talent who blends modern versatility with old-school fundamentals. In many ways, he defies NBA Commissioner Adam Silver’s concerns that the American developmental system overemphasizes playing games at the expense of practicing and produces NBA rookies who aren’t team-oriented players or effective defenders. …

Ralph and Kelly Flagg started dating when Kelly was in high school, and she likes to joke she picked her partner because his 6-9 height was essential to raising a basketball family. Kelly perfected Kevin McHale’s patented up-and-under move as a high school standout before playing on the wing at the University of Maine in the late-1990s. Ralph was a traditional post player for Eastern Maine Community College.

… As his time at Duke approaches, Flagg appears to have more in common with recent one-and-done stars such as Tatum, Williamson and Banchero than he does with Laettner, JJ Redick and other Blue Devils villains from a bygone era.

  1. A couple of other quotations from the article:

His athleticism is extraordinary: He bounces high off the court for powerful dunks, moves quickly side-to-side while guarding smaller players, flies into traffic for contested rebounds and loves to push the pace in transition.

    and

Either way, his defense will be central given his rare combination of intelligence, shot-blocking and lateral quickness.

‘Athleticism’, ‘bounces high’, and ‘lateral quickness’ — not phrases typically used to describe white athletes, no matter how athletic they are in reality. He must be something special, if his talents can break through the rhetorical ceiling under which woke sportswriters so blithely dwell in the current year.

    ~~

Personally, I think it’s great to be whatever you are. Life is a gift from God, use it wisely and enjoy it. And most peoples have something they can point to with some pride. But Euro whites have an unparalleled record of accomplishment–pushing the ball downfield, kicking ass and taking names–for the past 500 in a way that is unmatched. If we’re slapping dicks on the table, the white one wins.

  6. Never mind the WaPo, this hosing of the NYT deserves a brownie point:

For those of us who have criticized the cancel culture in higher education for years, the attacks and shunning have been unrelenting. The media has played a role in that culture and none more prominently than the New York Times. Recently, however, the mob came for liberal professors and media who have remained silent for years as conservatives and others were targeted on campus.

Suddenly, there is a new interest in free speech and academic freedom, including by the Times editors who blamed cancel culture for the recent demonstrations and disruptions on campus.

It’s been remarkable how total the circling of the wagons has been. Some of the ones doing it have even surprised me.

They must know how bad the levels of noticing will be. There will just be no way to roll it back or “put it in context”. For the longest time Jews have benefited enormously by obscuring their intense tribalism, identity and influence. How do you call what’s happening a “canard”? People can see even the ones who don’t want to. It’s almost being done to the levels of a scientific experiment.

I saw this yesterday and various commentators praising the Times for stating what has been obvious for years at this point. The Times is not a thought leader in any way, it just provides cover for whatever narrative the cultural elites plan to shill next. So I guess in a way it’s useful as a signal of what they are thinking, but as always don’t make the mistake that they have had some kind of road to Damascus conversion to decency or concern for the majority of America, they are just telegraphing the lever they plan to use to help retain control of institutions.

As Whites become a minority in this country it will become more common for them to be portrayed as villains. Rather than a rightwing dictator in our future, it will likely be a leftwing dictator who advocates expropriating the wealth of Whites and turning it over to non-Whites.

Whites may succeed in convincing non-Whites that a government based on a belief in freedom and individual rights is the best one but if we do not we have to look for an alternative. Abdul-Jabbar, whose hand was broken as a result of the punch and was out for 21 games

Interesting (but unsurprising) that Wikipedia calls it a “retaliatory punch” and omits mention of the sucker punch aspect.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kent_Benson#Professional_career

Two minutes into his very first game as a professional, Benson elbowed Los Angeles Lakers center Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in the abdomen, and Abdul-Jabbar gave Benson a concussion with a retaliatory punch.[14] Abdul-Jabbar broke his hand in the incident and was out for two months; otherwise, he could have potentially been suspended by the NBA.[15] Meanwhile, Benson missed only one contest and was back in action four days later against Chicago, playing 24 minutes.

But if you really want to see a biased (contemporary) account follow the link to reference 14: “would have made Muhammad Ali proud”. Yeah, sure. Sucker punching someone would do that. /s

    “White Duke”?

Well, at least WaPo is capitalizing “White.”

Why is ths such a big deal? There have always been some good White college basketball players.

What I find “noticeable” is that new WNBA “star” Caitlyn Clark is being lauded as some kind of savior for that league. Articles about ratings up. Same as when she was a college BB player.

Yes I suppose she’s pretty good, okay.

But so far I’ve not read about the possibility that the reason for her “role model” and popularity is that she is a White female who plays very well. Is that a factor in her fandom?

More relatable than the Black! lesbians who seem to dominate the WNBA.

I suspect that despite the Woke mania, the WNBA is trying to broaden their image.

Clark is pretty average looking but she’s not one of the dark giants who fill up most of the WNBA. The word about the “lesbian bully” culture there haven’t been totally squelched.

LOL you should try following some black women on Twitter, especially Jemele Hill. They have very explicitly made this point.

    Clark is pretty average looking

I think she looks like Bert from Sesame Street. She isn’t a lesbian but she has no femininity to her. In contrast take Hailey Van Lith of TCU, and formerly of LSU and Louisville. From the right angle she looks downright adorable. Sadly she dates Jalen Suggs of the Orlando Magic.

Here’s hoping he doesn’t get sucker-punched like Kent Benson did.

    Or Rudy Tomjonovich.

Or Luke Witte, the White Ohio State player mugged on court by negroes in 1972. *

Or Steve Kerr. He was sucker punched in the face during practice by his own teammate, negro Michael Jordan, because Kerr had previously expressed a differing opinion regarding a NBA players’ union matter.

Meanwhile, Cuckmerica worships Jackie Robinson, portraying him as Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. What a bunch of contrived BS.

Notice below how Witte (who became a Presbyterian minister, BTW, and who 50 years later, still has eye trouble from this attack) gets blamed for starting things. Always the same thing with these people and their cuckfluffers in the media. So tiresome.

    * https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luke_Witte

Witte is best known for the incident at the Ohio State–Minnesota game, played at Minnesota on January 25, 1972. According to the Big Ten Conference’s review of the game film, Witte appeared to elbow Minnesota guard Bobby Nix as the two teams headed to their locker rooms at halftime. During the second half, Ohio State led 50-44 with 36 seconds to go when Witte went for a layup but was fouled hard.

Immediately following the foul, Minnesota player Corky Taylor extended an arm to help Witte up, then kneed Witte in the groin and punched him in the head. While on the floor, he was also kicked and stomped by Minnesota player Ron Behagen, knocking him unconscious.

What followed was an extended brawl. Witte’s teammate, Dave Merchant, attempted to come to his aid, but was struck in the face several times by Gopher Jim Brewer. Another Buckeye, Mark Wagar (currently the president of Empire BlueCross BlueShield in New York), was attacked from behind by Minnesota player—and future Major League Baseball Hall of Famer—Dave Winfield, who landed four or five punches to Wagar’s head.

2024: The new tactical symbol was only unveiled after the attack had started

2022: Russians due to advancing too quickly also became prey to ambushes, suffering losses higher than Ukrainians who were hiding

2024: Russians have deployed more drones and means to destroy incoming Ukrainian reinforcements, the losses can be equal or even higher for Ukrainians for now

At the same time, with weapons like FPV drones, and FABs, the fighting style is also different

As the older generation of players ages out of the league (broadly, the “Curry-LeBron era”), the NBA is no longer being dominated by African-American blacks, which has been the case for 40-50 years. Guys like Cooper Flagg are the future of the NBA, alongside Eastern European “Whites” and black foreign-born players. Africa and France have both become hotspots for NBA talent and every team is investing major resources into scouring these continents looking for guys who can play. There is also an infrastructure outside of the American collegiate system that can nurture these players and send them directly to the pros when they reach the age requirement.

While I am sure that WaPo would love to see Flagg as a Laettner-type villain, it’s not very likely to happen because the sport is, well, a lot more diverse than it was when Laettner laced them up.

  59. @Mycale

I am interested in your basis for this view. Two of the top handful of players in the league are white, but I’m sure it can’t be more than about three in the top 50. There hasn’t been a US white player MVP for nearly 40 years (30 if you count Canada as part of the US), and there almost certainly will not be another in the foreseeable future. And given that almost all majority white countries outside of US prefer soccer, it’s likely to be a long time before there are more than a couple athletes in the category in the US. It is OK to acknowledge that black people are better at basketball.

alcindor sucker punched Benson because he was too much of a pussy to square off. He used his height advantage over the 6’ 11” and blindsided him, but the pussy broke his own hand on Benson’s head.

I don’t follow basketball, but I’ve seen video of the coward swinging elbows out on rebounds, knowing that at 7’2” they’d be at face level of most other players. he also ran and dodged Larry Bird on several occasions, even though he had 5 inches on him. Yes, that height advantage matters, even at that altitude, but it wasn’t enough to protect sissy lew, who was too afraid to fight without sucker punching. It’s too bad Bird didn’t get a chance to beat the love of Allah out of him

Witte later played with Jim Brewer on the Cavs. Brewer was a tough power forward.

And Dave Winfield got in some punchers.

In the Benson incident, Jabbar had jostled Benson first. Then he elbowed Jabbar, who tried to sell it to the refs before the sucker punch.

Jabber also punched Tom Burleson. But got punched by Dennis Awtry.

Tomjanovich was almost killed. He could taste the spinal fluid leaking into his mouth.

Cliff Hagen on the other hand routinely punched guys. He punched out Les Hunter. And the funniest is he knocked out John Brisker, a notorious player in the ABA. He did it during a jump ball when the refs weren’t watching. So every now and then it was white on black and not the other way around. Of course Cliff came from Kentucky and played for Rupp. He wouldn’t take anything from anyone. Tough as a $5 steak is what I read someone write about him.

Brisker may or may not have been killed as a mercenary in Uganda. He disappeared in 1978.

I never thought of Charlie Brown and Linus being that much older than Sally, especially since there are classroom scenes of the three of them together. I guess the exact ages of the characters are flexible, with Charlie Brown being older than Sally and Lucy being older than Linus.

When making A Charlie Brown Christmas, it was felt that to achieve the proper verisimilitude, actual children would be used to voice the characters rather than professional voice actors such like Mel Blanc and such. They cast six-year-old Cathy Sternberg as Sally, but the problem was that Cathy could not read yet*. Therefore, they had to feed her the lines verbally so she could repeat them. It produced clipped speech, but somehow it worked.

You are correct, though, that a lot of what is happening now is conservative Whites trying to get away from liberal Whites as much as it is conservative Whites trying to get away from non-Whites. In the long run, though, it will be a tough sell getting non-Whites to not support liberal anti-White Democrat candidates. Therefore, you may see Whites fleeing from states that turn into another California that are no longer majority White.

Non-Hispanic whites account for 69.1 percent of the U.S. population, according to the 2000 Census data. However, because the non-white population is heavily clustered in relatively few counties, the median U.S. county has a population that is 79.6% non-Hispanic white.

Thinking about it more, it is possible they really did take the (unweighted) mean of the county population percentages. So I am not certain where exactly the error is.

It’s because the Washington Post referred to White basketball players as villains, unironically and without quotation marks.

Eh, that’s a direct quote of his mother saying “White Duke villain,” because Duke has a history of recruiting preppy blue-chip recruits, smarter kids who could withstand the rigors of their tougher curriculum, not the usual athletes who use college basketball as a one-year NBA showcase because they’re not smart enough to graduate. However, their famous Coach K eventually reneged on that and started recruiting such “one-and-done” stars, as the article eventually notes Flagg is more like and which Steve, to his credit, did not extirpate, unlike you:

“Flagg appears to have more in common with recent one-and-done stars such as Tatum, Williamson and Banchero than he does with Laettner, JJ Redick and other Blue Devils villains from a bygone era.”

Some of the white Duke stars like Laettner, Redick, and Grayson Allen played with a sometimes dirty edge, but so did some of their black stars like Jay Williams or Chris Duhon. All were hated because they were from preppy, dominant Duke:

That probably had more to do with the Duke players taking after their coach, who played under famously tough-nosed Bobby Knight at Army and coached there too after serving:

I and a lot of basketball fans hated Duke for their preppy dominance, had little to do with black or white for most of us.

Know nothing of this Matt Walsh, but there’s nothing odd or contradictory here. And he–from your comment–is correct on both the trans and Title IX issues.

Applying Title IX to mean equal women’s college sports participation is obviously bogus. Men are much more interested in sports, as are women in stuff like fashion design. Men and women are not equal in a whole host of majors and activities in college. Because–duh–men and women are not the same.

Title IX as applied to sports is obviously an anti-male “separate but equal” policy. If you did the same with blacks and whites–here’s our “White basketball team” and our “Black basketball team”, people would howl about racism! and discrimination! But that’s precisely the reigning interpretation of Title IX for college sports. If you did it for something with a similar sex skew of interest and ability–say physics–and demanded equal numbers and funding for girls and guys, everyone would grasp the stupidity.

If Title IX’s topline non-discrimination language:

No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.

was taken seriously by the courts there would be no women’s sports at all. There would simply be various sports–football, basketball, baseball, track, crew, wrestling …–and there would be almost no women involved. That is actual non-discrimination.

But that is ridiculous as well … because non-discrimination is ridiculous. Men are not women, women are not men. Discriminating between them is good and necessary.

He leads all postseason players in estimated plus-minus, and is neck-and-neck with Nikola Jokić in win shares per 48 minutes and value over replacement player despite playing fewer games and minutes. The Wolves have outscored opponents by 7.9 points per 100 possessions with him on the court, and have been outscored by 5.9 points-per-100 with him off it — most notably those two and a half tell-tale minutes in Game 4. He’s the breakout star of this postseason; I can’t wait to see what he’s got in store for the rest of this heavyweight fight with Denver.”

You may not agree with this, especially since Jokic just had his best game in leading his team back to a 3-2 lead, and Edwards had his worst facing constant double teams, but regardless of how this series ends, I and many others think he’s now the best player in the NBA. Jokic simply has more veteran help in Murray and Gordon, whereas Ant has the one-dimensional Gobert and flaky Towns (Russillo says “I hate him” in the second video I linked). Without Murray a couple years ago, MVP Jokic was losing in the second round of the playoffs too.

Anthony Edwards is a major figure in the NBA at 22 years old.

    I’m impressed.

Larry Bird was the sixth pick in the draft and Boston was willing to wait a year for him. From wiki: Bird was selected by the Boston Celtics with the sixth overall pick in the 1978 NBA draft. He did not sign with the Celtics immediately; instead, he played out his final season at Indiana State and led the Sycamores to the NCAA title game.

  139. @Steve Sailer

Wait, what? Anthony Edwards quit the lead on “ER” to become a frigging basketball player?

    Now THAT is weird.

Well, I guess fewer setups, that could be construed as a perk.

This argument was settled decades ago. One cannot offer any women’s sports or not have any youth leagues for girls and then claim that there is no interest. In reality, as soon as TItle IX was passed, the interest in women’s sports went up and especially went up in the white suburbs. Female college athletes are much whiter and much more affluent than male college athletes due to football.

One of the big changes is that women have gone from not trying to be walk-ons to actually being walk-ons. That was one of the factors in the Varsity Blues scandal.

Remember, when Title IX started, there were a 13 point difference between male college students and female college students. In 2024, there is a 17 point difference in the other directions. Given that men are not attending at the same level was women, it makes sense to have more women’s sports teams and fewer men’s sports teams.

But sexist like Matt Walsh think that women are support to stay home and have children, it still makes no sense for Mr. Walsh and his cohort to claim that they are defending women’s sports.

One of the most important things that never gets mentioned about these White “busts” is how would they have faired playing for a majority White team like the 80’s Celtics??? No way the ultra woke NBA would allow such a team to exist now 🙁

Whites aren’t taking back pro basketball. Or Olympic sprinting. Start paying attention to things that matter, like biology.

Why are you assuming that Ralph was more than four years older than Kelly? He graduated from a two year college, which on the average would mean a three or more year difference in age. If she was a senior when they met, it could be just a three year difference. The only evidence I can see for the larger age difference is that they attended the same high school but never met. Since they both played basketball one would assume that they would have met.

“Whites aren’t taking back pro basketball.”

Maybe not. Almost certainly not. But whites could at least come to their senses and ban/eliminate college athletic scholarships, which merely subsidize thuggery and endanger white co-eds. I didn’t get a Shakespeare scholarship, why should some illiterate thug go to college for free, just for throwing a rubber ball through a hoop like a trained seal?

Let the NBA/NFL pay for their own farm teams.

Maybe we could even call them “plantation teams”. Wouldn’t that be a hoot and a half.

We have trained dog shows, why not “trained negro” shows too?

  151. @Steve Sailer

Given that players no longer spend 4 years in college being an NBA star at 22 is less impressive than it used to be. This is Edwards 4th year in the NBA. Compare: When Rick Barry led the league in scoring in his second year HE was 22. Of course, Barry was one of the greats and Edwards may turn out to be one too if he stays healthy. ATM he DOES get caught ball-watching a fair amount, though.

No, technically you are right, but it is only every decade or so that someone fundamentally changes basketball.

Who has done that since the advent of the NBA?

    LeBron
    Curry
    Kobe
    Jordan
    Bird/Magic (one dude, combined)
    Doc.
    Kareem
    Wilt/Russell (again, one dude)
    Mikan

Those are your “generational talents over the 75 years of Pro basketball. Wembyama is next up and with Lebron and Kobe nearing 40 it’s time. Cooper Flag? Just another good player.

she is exceptional for starting as a mistress, having the next step on the ladder handed to her for “black” femaleness and accomplishing nothing. She’s had to “kick down” precisely zero doors. Her utterances are stunning for their utter vapidity, and to the point that she makes Joe Biden sound “presidential” in comparison …

If all that is true, that’s a pretty damn impressive outcome she’s achieved. I’d read her book.

Your list is wrong. Mikan changed basketball, Russell arguably changed basketball, Wilt changed basketball (two dudes, two different changes), Curry changed basketball. None of the others did that, whatever their virtues.

…she was still in high school when started dating Cooper’s father, who was a community college graduate, so she was at least four years younger than he was.

Are you arithmetically challenged? It generally takes two years to graduate from a CC, so if she graduated from high school junior to senior when he graduated CC the age difference would be expected to be three years. I think a four years age difference would be fine, but your “at least” is anyway nonsense. And, twenty years or so on, why are you obsessing about this?

  158. Truth says:
    @Gandydancer

LeBron, began the player empowerment era AND the positionless basketball era.

Kareem, motivated the NCAA to ban the slam dunk.

Doc, made the slam dunk a part of our vocabulary and daily life as sports fans.

Bird/Magic, introduced the modern NCAA (the 1977 and 1978 NBA finals were on tape delay, aired AFTER the news).

Jordan, made basketball the second “international” sport.

Kobe, changed the way NBA teams draft. He was taken THIRTEENTH behind a bunch of mediocre college players. After Kobe, potential was king.

    But thanks for playing.
