Gyllenhaal has very little to prove in Hollywood, with his decades-long career speaking for itself. As of March 2024, he had starred in ten films that grossed $100 million or more at the box office. Some of the actor’s finest work include films like Source Code, Nocturnal Animals, Brokeback Mountain and Nightcrawler.

Some people still contest his marketability in terms of overall box office performance, while there has been criticism for some of the roles he took on in recent years. The first glimpse that fans got into his new limited series have quelled the noise, certainly on the latter.

Jake Gyllenhaal Plays A Prosecutor In Apple TV’s Mini-Series Presumed Innocent

Apple TV Plus’ legal thriller miniseries Presumed Innocent is the brainchild of successful television producer David E. Kelley, best known for Chicago Hope, Boston Legal, The Practice and Ally McBeal, among others. The show is based on the 1987 novel of the same name by renowned author Scott Turow.

The book was previously adapted to the screen, in a box office smash hit starring Harrison Ford in 1990. The more recent adaptation is made for TV, and features a total of eight episodes. Jake Gyllenhaal portrays a prosecutor called Rusty Sabich for each of those, the same role that Ford played decades before.

The limited series delves into the chilling narrative of a gruesome murder that shakes the Chicago Prosecuting Attorney's office. All eyes turn to Rusty as suspicions mount regarding his involvement in the crime. Preacher actress Ruth Negga stars as Gyllenhaal’s character’s wife, Barbara Sabich.

Fans Are Raving Over Jake Gyllenhaal In Presumed Innocent

The trailer for Presumed Innocent on Apple TV Plus’ YouTube channel gained traction quite fast, with nearly 400,000 people viewing it within a week. The video also amassed more than 6,000 likes in the same time period, but it was in the comments section that things really lit up.

One of the most popular comments alluded to the presumably uncharacteristic roles that Jake Gyllenhaal has taken on in the years leading up to this new project. Some of these roles include the films Ambulance, Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant and even Strange World, an animated film.

While none of these movies can be considered “unserious,” fans are accustomed to seeing Gyllenhaal in thrilling roles with dark undertones, as demonstrated by the comment: “Jake Gyllenhal back to playing serious roles. Finally!!”

Having successfully collaborated with Guy Ritchie in The Covenant in 2022, Gyllenhaal is once again joining forces with the director for yet another action film. The pair’s In the Grey was in the post-production stages in April 2024, according to Collider, and set for a January 2025 release. Henry Cavill, Eiza González and Rosamund Pike are other superstars in the cast.

Gyllenhaal has balanced his rise as a star of the big screen with multiple stage roles over the years, since he first performed on the West End in 2002. He is set to continue this trend, with a scheduled portrayal of Iago in the famous Shakespeare play Othello in 2025. The actor is also preparing for a role as Georges Seurat in a production of Sunday in the Park with George.
